Soft Start • Students are allowed to enter the building at 8: 20 am. They may enter through the main hallway or through the doors at the ends of pods. • Students will not be supervised before 8: 20. For the safety of your children, please have them arrive between 8: 20 -8: 30. • School starts at 8: 30. Students arriving after 8: 30 will be tardy and need to get a slip from the office before coming to the classroom.

Math Here are just a few concepts that will be learned in math this year… • Solving a variety of addition and subtraction one and two step word problems • Solving word problems involving money • Understanding place value to help add and subtract two and three-digit numbers • Estimating and measuring length using the standard and metric system • Recognizing and drawing shapes with specific attributes • Telling time to the nearest five minutes • Using addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays • Fractions – halves, thirds and fourths

Writing Writer’s Notebook: Students will use their notebook to record ideas, write rough drafts, and practice specific skills. Introduction and practice of various writing styles using authors as mentors. For example: • Narrative • Explanatory • Non-Fiction • Persuasive • Writing Process • Prewriting ►Drafting ► Revising ►Editing ► Publishing

Reading Our focus will be on comprehension, accuracy (decoding the words), fluency (reading the text with appropriate rate and expression), phonics (letter/sound relationships), and expanding vocabulary. • Whole Group, Small Group, and Individualized Instruction • Child-centered reading activities during this block may include: • Independent reading • Reading with others • Listening to reading • Work on writing • Responding to literature • Word work/Spelling – Fundations

Science & Social Studies Science • Cause and Effect: Survival, Organisms and their Environment • Cause and Effect: Weather’s effect on organisms • Cause and Effect: Forces and Motion Social Studies • Civics: Citizenship and Conflict Resolution • Geography: Tools, People, and Places • Economics: Choices and Decision Making • History: Connecting the Past and Present of Rooney Ranch

Specials Art, Music, Physical Education (AMP) Three day rotations • Art teacher - Mr. Oryshchyn • Music teacher - Mrs. Skiles • P. E. teacher - Mr. Halliwell *Mrs. Eikermann’s class will be split into three groups for specials. IMPORTANT: On days when your child has P. E. , please make sure your child brings to school or is wearing appropriate tennis shoes in order to participate.

Grading • Work done in class and homework will be reviewed and marked with a star, check, sticker, stamp, and/or comments. • Number grades (4, 3, 2, 1) are used for assessments and on report cards. 4 – Exceeds Standard 3 – Meets Standard 2 – Progressing toward standard 1 – Lacking adequate progress

Report Cards and Conferences • Report Cards will go home with students at the end of each trimester • Conferences are held on the following dates: October 11 th & October 12 th March 14 & March 15 th

Positive Behavior Support • School-wide behavior system Reach High Open Your Mind Accept responsibility Respect Others • ROAR Slips recognize individual accomplishments • ROAR Student of the Month • PAW Tracks recognize whole class accomplishments • Pause and Think Sheets are used to help students reflect on poor choices. If Think Sheets come home, please review them with your child, sign, and send back to school. • Friendship Workshop – Our character education curriculum which includes lessons on skills for learning, empathy, emotion management, and problem solving.

Homework • Daily Family Reading Goal: Have fun reading a good book or two! Purpose: To instill a love of reading Daily reading: Can be a combination of reading to your child, reading with your child, and your child reading to you Genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, magazines, recipes, etc. • Weekly homework–Sent home on Monday and due on Friday Math practice page(s) Fundations (phonics and spelling) **Math and Fundations/spelling student practice page(s) often requires parent involvement

Planners • Your child will be bringing home a planner daily. • Time will be given during class to write down weekly homework assignments. • Make sure your child records the title of the book(s) or article read each night. • Sign the planner daily; be sure it comes back to school everyday

To read or not to read? Let’s figure it out - - mathematically! Student A reads 20 minutes five nights of every week; Student B reads only 4 minutes a night. . . or not at all! Step 1: Multiply minutes a night X 5 times each week. Student A reads 20 min, X 5 times a week = 100 minutes. Student B reads 4 min. X 5 times a week = 20 minutes. Step 2: Multiply minutes a week X 4 weeks each month. Student A reads 400 minutes a month. Student B reads 80 minutes a month. Step 3: Multiply minutes a month X 9 months (school year). Student A reads 3, 600 minutes in a school year. Student B reads 720 minutes in a school year.

By the end of 6 th grade if Student A and Student B maintain these same reading habits then. . . Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 school days. Student B will have read the equivalent of 12 school days. One would expect the gap of information retained will have widened considerably and so will school performance. How do you think Student B will feel about him/herself as a student? SOME QUESTIONS TO PONDER: Which student would you expect to read better? Which student would you expect to read more? Which student would you expect to write better? Which student would you expect to have a better vocabulary? Which student would you expect to be more successful in school …. and in LIFE?

Miscellaneous Birthday Treats Our school will not be having children bring in food to celebrate birthdays. If you would like to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, here are some options: • Donate a children’s book to the classroom library in your child’s name • In addition, invitations to birthday parties should be mailed and not brought to school. Thank you! Vacation • Please complete a Pre-planned Absence form from the main office. Under most circumstances, we will not be providing work in advance. Volunteering • If you would like to come in regularly please see your child’s teacher. • Please e-mail your teacher if you would like to volunteer.

Early Release Throughout the year, there are five early release days for teacher professional development. Lunch will be provided. Students will be dismissed at 12: 40. They are on the following Fridays: September 22 nd, November 3 rd, February 16 th, March 16 th
