In 2014, 22 yr old Elliot Rodger killed six people and injured 14 others in California, before committing suicide. The attack began when he stabbed to death three flatmates in his apartment. Afterwards, he drove to a sorority house and shot three female students outside, killing two. He drove to a nearby delicatessen and shot to death a male student who was inside, and then drove away shooting and wounding several pedestrians and striking seven others with his car. The Cognitive Approach Ø Assumes thought processes influence both emotions and behaviour. Ø We are not always aware of the thoughts that influence us. Ø Our life experiences provide us with ways of understanding the world – these are called SCHEMAS. Ø No 2 people view the world in exactly the same way. HOW DOES THIS EXPLAIN ELLIOT’s BEHAVIOUR?

Match the statement to the Approach……. 1. Elliot had low levels of serotonin in the brain & showed signs of depression, so his behaviour had a physical basis (e. g. neurological). 2.
