Introduction to Political Science PSIR 104 2019 -20 SPRING
COURSE DESCRIPTION This course aims to introduce the students to the discipline of political science. It focuses on the major issues of political science including the scope and definition of politics and political activity, approaches to politics, political regimes, political ideologies, democracy, the state, party systems, political executive, legislature and constitution.
GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES Types of political knowledge (description, explanation, prescription), State and nations, Politics and power, basis of power, Democracies Sources & non-democracies, of political knowledge (authority, personal thought, science), Sovereignty, Political legitimacy, authority, ideologies (conservatism, fascism, anarchism, pacifism).
AIMS OF THE COURSE Supply students with introductory elements of political science. Enable students to use the major political terms appropriately in discussions about current political issues, as well as during essay writing and examinations. Encourage students to attempt to understand the complexities of the political world
METHOD OF ASSESMENT Midterm Exam – 30% Final Exam – 35% Quiz (10+10) – 20% Attendance Tutorial and Participation – 7% – 8%
MAKE-UP EXAMS These exams are granted only if those students who have an acceptable reason submitted (within 3 days after examination) in writing, e. g. the submission of a valid medical report. Make-up examinations consist of short essay questions only.
