Who we are • Ormside Education Centre is managed by Knowsley Enterprise Academy (KEA): - fund first 1, 000 visits using money donated by Knowsley Development Trust (KDT) offer short stay residential visits focus on outdoor learning • Our aim is to ensure that all children experience a fun residential break by taking advantage of the free places that have been made available.
Where we are Our centre is located in Ormside, a small village close to the historic market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland. Nestled in the beautiful Eden Valley between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District we have a great number of amazing activities just a short walk or drive away.
About the centre Ormside Education Centre is a former railway station house on the Settle to Carlisle railway. Closed in 1952 - the station was reopened as a residential centre by Ruffwood school in the 1960’s. Sadly the centre closed in 2008. In 2010 the revival began and after an extensive volunteer led renovation it was re-opened by the Mayor of Appleby in July 2017.

John Muir Award v. Free awards scheme – John Muir Trust v. Knowsley Enterprise Academy is the provider v Covers four areas: - discover - explore - conserve - share v We will work alongside the school to achieve a ‘discovery’ level award for each child
Facilities v. Centre sleeps 32 (bunk rooms) v. Games room v. Self catering v. Currently not fully accessible v. Future extension 2018 / 19: - upscale to a capacity of 50 - new games room - study area - bespoke woodland activity area - fully accessible
Logistics v. Knowsley Enterprise Academy funds all: - Transport - Accommodation - All activities and instruction v School is responsible for: - Catering - Centre administration - Discipline / behaviour - Quiet hours 2100 – 0800 (neighbours and activities)
Key Points v. Packing List - Trainers / sturdy shoes (not new – Karrimor type) - Waterproof jacket and fleece (basic, practical) - Water bottle (sports type) - T – shirts and tracksuit bottoms (scruffs) - No valuables (minimum spending money) v Media policy – we will conform to agreed school policies v Catering – please consider practical meals, portion control and dietary requirements to avoid unnecessary wastage or expenditure
