Gender Objective Provide mechanism to ensure women’s involvement in decision-making and sustainable production and marketing practices to improve their socioeconomic wellbeing within the vegetable-agroforestry system

Women Organization Study Answered the question how is farm life organized/ordered in Songco? Particularly, it was interested in understanding the meaning structure through which Songco women organize/order their everyday farm life. The meaning structure that refers to the interpretive frame—the frame through which people view the world, make sense of their realities and order or organize their lives--is the unknown of the study.

Contribution to Gender Objective Understanding the way women order their lives can validate research’s assumption on the gender/societal structure surface women’s potential contribution and participation in the VAF system provide insight on the nature of support they need to be able to participate equitably in the VAF system

Theoretical Assumptions Organization exists in people’s accounts or stories Stories are a meaning-making device that assembles objects, actions and events into a comprehensive pattern

Methodological Approach People tell stories in conversation Conversations were made with a dozen Songco women and men between May 2005 and September 2008 Recorded in audio and video forms Yielded 500 pages of transcripts

Analytical Frame Accounts/Stories are analyzed using Greimas’ Semio Narrative Theory. Elements of narrative include object, agents and beneficiaries
