What’s the difference between a Hazard and a Risk? z. What is a HAZARD? z. What is a RISK?
A Hazard is. . . Clause 3 of the OHS Regulation 2001 defines a hazard as: ‘. . . anything (including work practices or procedures) that has the potential to harm the health or safety of a person. ’
A Risk is … ‘. . . anything (including work practices or procedures) that is likely/probable/may or could harm the health or safety of a person. ’

Employer to identify hazards Clause 9 of the OHS Regulation 2001 states: “… employers must take reasonable care to identify any foreseeable hazards to: z any employee of the employer z any other person legally at the employer’s place of work. ”
What hazards must employer identify? z The work premises z Work practices, work systems & shift work arrangements z Plant z Hazardous substances z The presence of asbestos z Manual handling z Layout/condition of workplace z Biological organisms z Physical working environment including: y. Electrocution y. Drowning y. Fire/explosion y. People slipping, tripping or falling y. Contact with moving/ stationary object y. Noise, heat, cold, vibration, radiation, electricity, contaminated air, confined space y. Workplace violence
Effective hazard identification procedures must be in place: z Immediately prior to using premises for the first time (as a place of work) z Before and during installation, erection, commissioning or alterations to plant z Before changes to work practices and systems of work are introduced z Before hazardous substances are introduced z While work is being carried out z When new/additional information is made available from an authoritative source
