What is RSE? • Relationships and sex education (RSE) is learning about the emotional,

What is RSE? • Relationships and sex education (RSE) is learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up, relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health. It should equip children and young people with the information, skills and positive values to have safe, fulfilling relationships. • The statutory guidance for Relationships Education and Health Education will come into effect in all primary schools from 2020, including academies, free schools and independent schools. • RSE is taught alongside PSHE lessons and will be taught in straight year groups to ensure that all lessons are age appropriate.

Nazeing Primary RSE aims The aims of relationships and sex education (RSE) at our school are to: • Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place • Prepare pupils for puberty, and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene • Help pupils develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy • Create a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships • Teach pupils the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies

Delivering RSE is taught within the personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education curriculum.

Delivering RSE is taught within the personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education curriculum. Biological aspects of RSE are taught within the science curriculum, and other aspects are included in religious education (RE). Relationships education focuses on teaching the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships including: • Families and people who care for me • Caring friendships • Respectful relationships • Online relationships • Being safe By the end of primary school, pupils will have been taught content on: • mental wellbeing • changing adolescent body • internet safety and harms • physical health and fitness • healthy eating • basic first aid • health and prevention • facts and risks associated with drugs, alcohol and tobacco

RSE Policy • We have an RSE policy which outlines our RSE curriculum and how it is taught. • It outlines our aims, the statutory guidance, how we developed our policy, our curriculum overview, the roles and responsibilities of the adults delivering RSE, the parental right to withdraw from the sex education within RSE and how the lessons will be monitored. • Our RSE policy is available to view on the school website as well as by the school office.

Parental Engagement • The important lessons you teach your child about healthy relationships, looking after themselves and staying safe, are respected and valued under this new curriculum. Teaching at school will complement and reinforce the lessons you teach your child as they grow up. • You will be made aware when RSE lessons will be taking place and you are able to request to view the lesson plans in advance in case your child has questions when they get home. • Feel free to discuss lessons with the class teacher if you are unsure of what has been covered and how you may answer questions that may arise. • Teachers are always available to discuss any uncertainties and to answer any questions.
