The three groups of marine life • Organisms that float or drift freely near the ocean`s surface are called plankton. • Most plankton are microscopic. • Plankton are divided into two groupsthose that are planilike (phytoplankton) and those that are animal-like (zooplankton).
The benthic environment • In addition to being divided into zones based on depth, the ocean floor is divided into ecological zones based on where different types of benthos live. These zones are grouped into one major marine environment-the benthic environment. The benthic environment, or bottom environment, is the region near the ocean floor and all the organisms that live on or near it.
The intertidal zone • The shallowest benthic zone, called the intertidal zone, is located between the low-tide and high-tide limits. Twice a day, the intertidal zone changes. As the tide flows in, the zone is covered with ocean water. Then, as the tide flows out, the intertidal zone is exposed to the air and sun.
The sublittoral zone • The subittoral zone begins where the intertidal zone ends at the low tide limit. The sublttoral zone ends at the edge of the continental shelf about 200 m below sea level. The sublittoral zone is more stable then the intertidal zone.
The bathyal zone • The bathyal (bath ee uhl) zone exthbds from the edge of the continental shelf to the abyssal plane.
The Abyssal Zone • • • No Plants Very few animals On Abyssal Plain Largest ecological zone Crabs, sponges, worms, sea cucumbers
The Hadal Zone • The deepest Benthic Zone. • Floor of ocean trenches • Type of sponge, few species of worms, • and type of clam.
The Pelagic Environment • The zone near the ocean’s floor, and at the middle depths of the ocean.
The Neritic Zone • • • Covers the continental shelf. Warm, shallow zone Largest concentration of marine life. Receives sunlight, is warm Food supply for other marine animals
The Oceanic Zone • Volume of water that covers the entire sea floor except the continental shelf. • Giant Squid, whales
