What are the Main Principles of ISO 14001? • Environmental Policy containing the commitment of management to regulatory compliance, continual improvement and prevention of pollution. This policy is to be made available to the public. .
• Planning to identify the environmental aspects associated with the organization's operations, set objectives and develop a management plan. • Implementation & Operation addressing responsibilities, training, communications—both internal and external, documentation, document control, operational control and emergency preparedness/response. • Checking and Corrective Action that measures and records achievement against the planning goals, identifies and tracks correction of deficiencies, and reviews the effectiveness of the EMS. • Management Review to monitor the program and make corrections when appropriate
Duty of Care – Understand Your Responsibilities Regarding Waste In mixed company groups identify : • What types of waste you have (5 min) • How you store waste correctly (5 min) • How you check waste is dealt with correctly (5 min) • What are waste transfer notes (5 min) • Who transports waste (5 min) • How you control specific types of waste (5 min) • Who sends waste to landfill (5 min)
What will the ISO 14001 standard changes mean? • The ISO 14001 standard was undergoing review, with a draft expected to be released early 2014 and the new standard to be released sometime in 2015. • They may be setting minimum environmental performance standards as hopefully they too have identified there are numerous organisations certified but with poor performance and little or no continuous improvement. • It is quite possible that organisations may need to place greater emphasis on the environment and Environmental Management System coordinators worldwide may have greater responsibility within an organisation.
What will the ISO 14001 standard changes mean? • Take this time to research the changes in ISO 14001 standard and highlight this in a document to be presented to your tutor • Look at the ISO 14004 standard and explain some methods of management systems and their implementation and the principles involved
