HRADEC KRÁLOVÉ AND ITS ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECES

MIDDLE AGES, RENAISSANCE • One of the oldest towns in Bohemia, major construction activity went on • Hradec was a dowry town of Queens of Bohemia • Two landmarks of note include the Holy Spirit Cathedral and the White Tower

THE HOLY SPIRIT CATHEDRAL Obr. 1 • Its construction began in the 14 th century • Finished in 1360 s under Queen Elizabeth of Pomerania • Originally Gothic style • A triple nave church with a long presbytery • In 17 th century promoted to a cathedral • Restored in 19 th century during Gothic Revival • Material used-bricks

WHITE TOWER Obr. 2 • Height: 72 meters • Constructed in the 16 th century in Renaissance style thanks to donations • Third largest bell called Augustin in the Czech republic is housed inside • Constructed from white sandstone • Night tours available on some days

20 th CENTURY • After Austrian army was defeated at the Battle of Hradec Králové, its huge fortifications were torn down and the town began to develop quickly • At the beginning of the 20 th century a zoning plan was worked out and fine urbanism was put in place • First two decades of the 20 th century saw major construction activity

GOČÁR‘S STAIRCASE Obr. 3 • Designed by Josef Gočár, a renowned Czech architect of 1910 -1920 s • Concrete based construction

BATH HOUSE Obr. 4 • Now a large indoor swimming pool • Wave technology installed in 1932 still in operation • Construction finished in 1923 • Designed by Oldřich Liska

MUNICIPAL BUILDING Obr. 5 • Designed by Josef Gočár • Served as seat of Municipal and Financial Authority • Constructivism/functionalis m style

MUSEUM OF EAST BOHEMIA Obr. 6 • Designed by Jan Kotěra • Interiors and decorations designed by leading Czech modernists

SCHOOL BUILDINGS IN LIPKY DISTRICT Obr. 7 • Designed by Josef Gočár to house elementary and secondary schools • Constructed in 1920 s representing a transition from cubism to functionalism

FORMER ANGLOBANKA Obr. 8 • A fine example of rondocubism of which Josef Gočár was a co-creator • Orignally designed as a seat of a banking company • Construction completed in 1920 s

CHURCH OF AMBROSE THE PRIEST Obr. 9 • Complex of buildings consisting of modernist church, a columbarium and utility buidlings • Completed in 1920 s • Working church of Czechoslovak Hussite Church • Completed in 1926 and designed by Josef Gočár
