• To apply you must complete the Local Authority form of the borough that you live in. • You can choose a mixture of schools from different local authorities. • You must complete our supplementary form (Form A) and return it to the school including a copy of the baptismal certificate (if your daughter is Catholic) – there is no need for a Priest’s reference. • You must make sure to meet the application deadline of 31 st October 2020.

What happens next … • Your local authority receives your form and, if you have also chosen a school in another authority, they will notify that local authority on your behalf • Hertfordshire residents can make 4 choices. • In other local authorities the number differs, but the process is the same.

 • On the Local Authority form you are asked to list the schools

• On the Local Authority form you are asked to list the schools in order of preference (1 st choice to 4 th). • Your application is sent simultaneously to all 4 schools. • Each school receives your child’s name, along with all the other applicants who have named the school, in alphabetical order. • The school does not know what place they were in your list.

• In all 4 schools members of the admitting authority (in our case, the Governors) will meet and consider the alphabetical list and rank all applications in accordance with their admissions criteria. • This list will be sent back to the ‘Clearing House’ and the first 160 ranked applications will be allocated places. Should a child within the first 160 be offered another school, which the family have ranked higher, then that place will be allocated to the next child on the list.

What happens in the ‘Clearing House’ • Parents of Child A have chosen four

What happens in the ‘Clearing House’ • Parents of Child A have chosen four schools: • All 4 schools tell the ‘Clearing House’ whether the child has met their criteria. • The ‘Clearing House’ looks at the application form. Some of the different scenarios are listed below: § § § • P Q R S – – 1 2 3 4 If the first choice school (school P) is able to offer a place then the child is offered school P and the other 3 schools are told to take Child A of their list and the next child on their list is awarded a place. If only schools Q and S offer a place then the ‘Clearing House’ will allocate a place at school Q. The application will then be withdrawn from schools R and S, however, school P will keep the child on their lists. If no school offers a place then the ‘Clearing House’ waits until the end of the whole process and gives the child a place at the school nearest to home that still has spaces. The child will remain on the waiting list for all the schools that are a higher preference than the one allocated.

Key Issues • Parents are notified until the national allocation day in March - when the whole clearing process is complete. • Schools do not know what place they were on the local authority application form and will allocate places in accordance with their own admissions criteria (not in line with your list of preferences). • Don’t try to second guess the system. • No school can say you must place them in ‘ 1 st place only’. • It is important to put down the schools in the order that you really want them. • Do get in touch if we can help you further!
