Camera Shot Types Why do we need them? Television is made up of hundreds and thousands of pictures, called shots, each of which must be carefully planned. Without these shots, the person who edits the movie, TV show, or commercial would have nothing to work with. Using a single shot type would make for a VERY BORINGand VISUALLY UNIMPRESSIVE video / film.

Camera Shot Types Extreme Long Shot (XLS) In the extreme wide shot, the view

Camera Shot Types Extreme Long Shot (XLS) In the extreme wide shot, the view is so far from the subject that she isn't even visible. The point of this shot is to show the subject's surroundings. Usually used as an establishing shot.

Camera Shot Types Long Shot (LS) Subject is completely in the frame with only a little space above and below them. Lets you see the subject well enough to see who it is, while still letting the viewer see their environment.

Camera Shot Types Medium Long Shot (MLS) Used often in Interviews with more than 2 persons (small group). Close enough to see who the subjects are, but far enough to see what’s going on around them.

Camera Shot Types Medium Shot (MS) Used often in interviews with only 1 subject. Most “relaxing” of all the shots as it lets you see the subject and their surroundings equally. Used VERY often in NEWS Broadcasts.

Camera Shot Types Medium Close-Up (MCU) Used often in interviews with only 2 subjects (often referred to as a “Two Shot”). Shows head and some chest.
