WHAT IS MUSICAL THEATRE? Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humor, love, anger – are communicated through the words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. Although musical theatre overlaps with other theatrical forms like opera and dance, it may be distinguished by the equal importance given to the music as compared with the dialogue, movement and other elements. Since the early 20 th century, musical theatre stage works have generally been called, simply, musicals.

Inspired by the imagination of P. T. Barnum, The Greatest Showman is an original musical that celebrates the birth of show business & tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation. The movie begins with a flashback to Barnum's childhood where he and his father work for the Hallett family, and he becomes infatuated with their daughter, Charity. Though Charity is being sent to finishing school, Barnum reassures her they will not be separated. The two keep in touch through letters until they meet again in adulthood, eventually marrying and raising two daughters, in New York City. They live a humble life; though Charity is happy, Barnum dreams of more. WHAT IS THE GREATEST SHOWMAN? Barnum loses his job at a shipping company after the company goes bankrupt. Taking a risky bet, he takes out a large loan from a bank and uses this loan to buy Barnum’s American Museum in downtown Manhattan, an attraction showcasing various wax models. Initially, sales are slow; and on the suggestion of his children to showcase something "alive", Barnum searches for "freaks" to serve as performers for his museum. This attracts a large audience despite protests and poor reviews, prompting Barnum to rename his venture "Barnum's Circus". Barnum goes on tour with a famous singer in an attempt to earn more money but on his return home he finds his circus on fire, caused by a fight between the protesters and the troupe. Depressed, Barnum retreats to a local pub, where his troupe find him there and persuade him to rebuild the circus. As rebuilding the circus in its original location would be too expensive, Barnum rebuilds it as an open-air tent circus by the docks. The new, revamped circus is a huge success, and Barnum gives full control of the show to Carlyle so he can focus on his family.
