Personal Narrative Session 7 2019
I can… …generate multiple leads as a way to rehearse a story in order to develop the best hook.
Connection Look back over your collection of narratives and choose just one. Writers often call that a seed idea, meaning you’ll nourish and grow that seed idea into a published piece of writing.
Connection 1. Choose a personal narrative that is about a small moment only. -Watermelon analogy 2. Pick one that has a moral, theme, or lesson learned.
Today I want to teach you that writers also Teaching rehearse for Point writing by trying out several different leads.
Teaching Leads… can pull us right into the story by including precise details can also include the main character thinking in a way that touches on the heart of the story The first sentences or paragraphs of a story—or lead—matter.
Different Kinds of Leads Talking Lead—The lead begins with dialogue. Sound Effect Lead—The lead gets the reader quickly involved in the story by starting a sound word. Action Lead—The lead gets the reader quickly involved in the story by starting with an exciting event or some kind of action. Snapshot Lead—When you paint a picture with words, you draw in the reader. Question Lead—The lead begins with asking your readers an interesting question. Flashback Lead—The lead takes the reader back to a specific event in the past
STUDENT TASK: Active Engagem ent Take out the sample narratives I have given you (“Ai’s” and “Look Up and Watch the Show”) Work with your partner to identify the type of lead this author used. Mark it down on the paper. What makes the lead powerful? Which lead do you like the best? Does the author use more than one strategy when creating the lead?

Writers are always trying to figure out ways to improve their own writing. Link Good 6 th-grade leads include: more than one type of lead (talking, sound effect, action, snapshot, question, flashback), a mixture of details, action, dialogue, and inner thinking, theme (hint at the deeper meaning of the story). Writing Task: Try a few different leads on your own story!
Mid. Workshop Teaching Writers… Consider not only how to begin your stories but where to begin your stories. When writers try different starting points – not just different techniques for starting – some new insight or angle emerges. Writers experiment with starting their storytelling at different places within the story, to see if they end up telling the story more powerfully. Share example.
Partner Sharing Share one of your leads with your partner in your best storytelling voice. Then, share how the lead grabbed your attention.
