Psychology Majors: The Foreign Language Placement Test • Psychology majors must complete 6 hours at the sophomore level or above in a single language. • E. g. , 2301 and 2302 • However students cannot start out at the second year level if they have not taken foreign language before! • Keep in mind that the Spanish and American Sign Language classes fill VERY quickly!!! • If students do not register on their designated registration date, it is likely that the class will already be full! SO register ASAP!

Foreign Language Options: starting out taking the basics • Students who have not taken a foreign language before (including high school) will have to take: • The whole first year of foreign language before moving onto the second year: – 1501, 1502 OR 1301, 1302 (depending on the language) • For Spanish, Texas Tech does not offer 1501 and 1502 so students will need to take SPCS 1511 and 1512. These are South Plains College courses that are taught on the Texas Tech Campus. (Once they verified that the student did not take Spanish in high school, Tech will enroll the student into SPCS 1511) – In this case, the student will take 1511, 1512, 2301, and 2302 (four semesters or 16 hours)

Foreign Language Options: 1 st year review • If the student took 2 yrs of the language in high school but are not particularly comfortable with it, the student should take 1507, a review of the first year foreign language • Followed by 2301 and 2302 (e. g. , 3 hrs or 11 hrs)

Foreign Language Options: Getting into the sophomore level • If the student took 3 or more years of foreign language in high school and feels comfortable with it, the student is encouraged to take the foreign language placement test. • It is not unusual for students with a good background to test out of all or part of the foreign language requirements. –This will save time and money!!
