The significance of this technology Through the use of social media distances have been rendered futile. Keeping in touch with others can be done quickly via this platform and the world has turned into a small village where everyone knows everything about each other. Social media has grown immensely in popularity in the last decade and it has been used extensively by young people.
The evolution of social media In 1961 Leonard Kleinrock came up with the idea of APRANET and this network. In 1969 the first try at a university fails. In 1981 scientists get their own platform from the NSF(National Science Foundation). In 1987 20. 000 people entered the internet. In 1992 the first video and audio are shown on the internet. In 1994 Yahoo is created. In 1998 Google changes the internet fovever. In 2000 Youtube and Reddit are both launched.
Advantages It is blatantly obvious that this technology can be the prominent contributor to world equality. Some argue that it could even be the smoking gun that would eradicate poverty by improving everyone's life both the ''privileged'' and the poor. That's because it could revolutionize teaching. Social media could make people more knowledgeable, making therefore a better functiong democracy. Also, it helps destroy racism and bring down stereotypes.
Disadvantages However, this miracle that social media is does not come without shortcomings. It is blatantly obvious that this technology, mundane as it may seem to us, is not ubiquitus. Those who can not afford to obtain it, are permanently trapped in the rat race. . . in inequality and poverty. That's because those who do have access to the internet and social media will always be ''privileged'' in comparison to them, as they will inherently have the resources and the motivation others are deprived of.
Conclusion On balance, this great invention has disadvantages, it has great potential and will probably improve further in the future. After all, it is quintessentially linked with the perpetual sharing of knowledge/different perceptions of the world/multiculturalism etc. Social media are definitely worth it, despite their problems!
