Evolution of ISO 9004 How has ISO 9004 evolved over time: • ISO 9004 -1: 1994 “Quality management and quality system elements – Part 1: Guidelines” – The intent of ISO 9004 was to provide quality and management system guidelines – ISO 9001 was intended to follow ISO 9004 for certification purposes – The market ended up using ISO 9001 only ISO/TC 176/TG 01

Evolution of ISO 9004 How has ISO 9004 evolved over time: • ISO 9004: 2000 “Quality management systems Guidelines for performance improvements” – Intended to be used with ISO 9001 as a consistent pair, with ISO 9004 going beyond with expanded requirements…a continuation – ISO 9001 (effectiveness) was imbedded in ISO 9004 (efficiency) – Self assessment was introduced ISO/TC 176/TG 01
