What is community? In her memoir, A City Year, Suzanne Goldsmith offers her own definition of the word community: Communities are not built of friends, or of groups with similar styles and tastes, or even of people who like and understand each other. They are built of people who feel they are part of something that is bigger than themselves: a shared goal or enterprise, like righting a wrong, or building a road, or raising children, or living honorably, or worshipping a god. To build community requires only the ability to see value in others, to look at them and see a potential partner in one’s enterprise.

Do you agree or disagree with these statements? Communities should only include people who are friends and who like each other. Is everyone always treated the same in a community? Can you be apart of multiply communities? Is your mentor group a community? Everyone in the community must have the same values and believes? What communities are you apart of?

What can you contribute to our community? As you begin to explore the concept of community, it’s the collection of peoples values & beliefs and unique identities which make our school community so fantastic. In the learning task, you will be required to identify you own common characteristics that you contribute to our community as well as your peers. What are your strengths? How can they be used to build and contribute to our community?
