Command words (General) Name / State If the question asks you this you only need to name or state your answer. No further description is required. You must give more detail in your answer. Give details about the feature e. g. HTML is the language web pages are written in. It is made up of a series of tags which are interpreted by the browser. If asked to give examples/ reasons then do so, making sure they are relevant to the question! Describe / explain For any questions where you are given a specific problem your answer must be relevant to that e. g. if the problem states specific variable names you must use them or you will lose marks.

Command words (continue) Using a design methodology of your choice ……. You must design a solution to the problem you have been given using either pseudocode, a flow chart or structured diagram. You will not get the marks if you code the solution. Using a programming language you are familiar with. . You must code a solution to the problem you have been given using the appropriate language (Python in a Software Development question, HTML/CSS/Javascript for Web Design/ SQL for Databases. You will not get the marks unless your syntax is correct.

General Tips The vast majority of questions in computing are based around your understanding

General Tips The vast majority of questions in computing are based around your understanding of implementing the various languages. Practice is key not just for your coursework but for theory questions too. That’s why we fully immerse you in the practical before looking at the questions. Read the problems very carefully. A good tip for both coursework and exam is to highlight potential variables, standard algorithms etc in the problem as your reading through it. Remember solutions must match the problem statement / design so if they use specific names for variables, functions etc you need to as well. If you are given an example of something, say a way of testing a website and asked to name others you will not get marks for giving the one they gave you in the question. Again, make sure you read the question!
