Comparing LXI and PXI for Switching Applications David Owen Business Development Manager, Pickering Interfaces LXI Consortium Technical Chairman PXISA Technical Committee Member david. owen@pickeringtest. com
Pickering Interfaces n Principal products are switching systems n Sister company to Pickering Electronics l Manufacturer of instrument grade reed relays n Company started with GPIB switching assemblies n Later developed VXI and then PXI switching solutions l PXI now forms the major part of its switching business l But LXI is catching up quickly n Board level members of both the PXISA and LXI Consortium Hamburg
Switching n It’s not exciting n But it is complicated with both obvious and subtle trade off’s l Density l Cost l Voltage and Current rating l Path loss l BW l Configurations l Connectors l Software management n So the solutions are diverse and choices not always clear Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
PXI Standard (1) n Standardised around the PCI bus l With a PCI Express extension using a different interface n PC Centric l Central processing model via a shared high speed backplane connection n Relatively simple modules, register controlled n Single controller l Embedded controller or remote controller via proprietary interface n Modular l Fixed mechanical form factor l Shared central power supply l Shared cooling l Defined backplane connectivity for PCI/PCI Express and a trigger system Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
PXI Standard (2) n Software framework l VISA drivers are required l Tends to be Windows centric n Modules appear as an extension of the PC l Behave as though they are directly on the computers PCI Bus system l Tightly coupled to the PC hardware n So don’t hot plug and watch the power up sequence n Large variety of functions available Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
What PXI does NOT define n Cooling standards l Avoided because of the costs and past experience on VXI n Detailed power supply specification n Electrical interaction between modules l Radiated EMC l Conducted EMC l Module screening n Simple ways of controlling at a distance n Vendor specific features l Chassis indicators (power etc) n No set compliance test procedure Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
LXI Distributed System n LXI is distributed l Can have many controllers l Can have peer to peer l Can include VPN connections l It has a consistent LAN interface n Compliance tested by third party n It is NOT a modular system Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
What the LXI Standard does NOT do n Set any size constraints l Devices can be rack mount or any other format n Control device cooling l It is up to the vendor to behave in a good neighbour way and provide enough cooling for the device to work n There is some guidance n Control EMC or measure device performance l It is up to the vendor to make the product fit for purpose n Since most are self contained interaction problems are minimal Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
PXI and LXI comparison n The standards are quite different n PXI focus is a central processing model based on the PC using relatively simple mechanically defined instruments requiring a very high speed bus l Just like any other card you might insert in a PC l It REQUIRES a high speed bus to work n LXI focus is on a distributed system using intelligent boxes of any size communicating by a message based interface over a fast bus l Some similarity to GPIB but with more options l It is much less reliant on a high speed bus to work Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
Some clear areas of difference (1) n Parametric performance l LXI has freedom of size and vendor specific conditioning to get the very best performance l PXI is limited by module size and lack of inter-module specifications in a relatively unshielded environment n Supporting large components l Mechanical freedom of LXI is an advantage l PXI implementations can be cumbersome and not very cost effective n Supporting large solutions l LXI has the advantage of space to implement large arrays of components as a single entity l PXI has to build these up from separate entities with module and interconnection overheads and additional software complexity Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
Some clear areas of differences (2) n Supporting large variety of functions in a small volume l PXI has the clear advantage since a chassis can support diverse functions such as switching, data acquisition, signal generation and measuring devices if the functionality can be fitted comfortably in the PXI mechanical profile l LXI has the high overhead on each function of its embedded controller n Minimum feature set to support web etc. n Control at a distance l LXI has the advantage because it can operate over continental distances through standard IT networks. n Now some specific case examples Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
The component size issue n Customer needed a 4 x 4 RF matrix l Needed good RF performance to beyond 3 GHz l Testing RF modules supporting multiple air interface standards over several frequency bands RF Test equipment Multiple RF Modules 4 x 4 or 4 x 8 RF matrix Each module is tested by up to 4 RF testers 4 testers used because of legacy purchases and ability to use the best solution for that band Matrix used to allow concurrent testing Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
Customer feedback n Using 30 -750 Pickering VXI solution n Concerned about using VXI l Cost l Future availability l Physical size n Had no other need for VXI products in the chassis since air interface test instruments were GPIB based n Had to be rack mounted n Two routes were offered l PXI (existing product) l LXI (new product) Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
Comparing solutions 4 x 4 Microwave Matrix PXI n 40 -789 Single l 10 PXI slots for one matrix l 4/5 U High in a rack 4 x 4 Microwave Matrix LXI n 60 -750 Dual Version l 2 U for single or dual matrices Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
LXI solution chosen n Lower cost l No chassis or controller interface l Easier mechanical design n More compact physical size n More robust operation l Not an extension of the PCI Bus n Easier to transport to overseas factories l Including China n Once the first system was up proved easy to deploy l It worked first time Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
The single switching entity example n User was testing displays systems requiring 75Ω impedance l 8 video input signals being routed to a bank of displays in turn for soak testing n Needed a configurable video matrix l Some basic systems at 24 x 8 l Other applications 48 x 8 or a dual 24 x 8 n Two routes discussed l PXI l LXI Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
Video Multiplexer Example n Multiplexer built up PXI n Single entity Multiplexer LXI l 40 -726 12 x 8 matrix multiple l 60 -711 dual 24 x 8 matrix slots Problem for PXI is number of connections, configuring and relay count Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
Comparing the solutions n PXI built up from multiple modules in a PXI chassis l Cabling costs l High infrastructure overhead n LXI is an integrated solution l PCB traces replace cables l Single controller interface n LXI was the clear user choice l No configuration cables n Time to configure n Cost of cabling l Easier to programme l More compact l Easier to understand Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
Control at a distance n User was testing cables in an airframe l Fuselage testing l Wing testing l Integrated airframe testing n Using a Fluke tester to check for data cable (Ethernet like) integrity n An aircraft is big l Needed switching to loop cables back n Both wings n Fuselage l And wanted to be able to control the switching from the cockpit or anywhere else they were working Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
Hardware solution available in PXI n Established range of PXI modules designed for this type of application n But control at a distance in PXI is not that easy l and they had concerns over robustness of hanging switching cards of the PCI bus n In LXI its much simpler The 60 -100 A allows Pickering switching modules to be supported through an LXI conformant interface, providing discovery, programmatic and soft front panels with web access Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
Why 60 -100 A? n We already had suitable modules for testing the cables l Designed for differential pairs n 60 -100 A supports these modules in an LXI environment l Provides discovery for the modules l Provides SFP for each module l Programmatic interface very similar to PXI l The distances involved are bridged very easily using standard CAT 5 cables Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
High Voltage Insulation Testing Airframe n Cable insulation testing n Again distance issues involved n 60 -310 300 x 2 matrix 1 k. V rating l With high closure capacity for insulation testing Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
Be careful about LXI and PXI comparisons n These examples chosen to show the differences where LXI has an advantage n Where PXI is better we simply offer it unless there are other reasons l Where switching is mixed in with instruments l Where there is a high diversity of switching functions we offer PXI modules in PXI or LXI environment using 60 -100 n The user decides Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
Our View on LXI and PXI n They are complimentary solutions l LXI does things that are hard or impossible in PXI l PXI does things that may have too high an overhead in LXI can then be used to implement bigger versions with higher performance levels l With lower cost for larger systems n Both product platforms have their attractions l So both platforms will continue to grow with LXI enabled product being the largest element n Hybrid systems will be common l PXI and LXI solutions supporting different parts of the system Nordic test Forum 2008 Hamburg
