 Third Grade Curriculum English Language Arts HMH Journeys is the CUSD adopted reading

Third Grade Curriculum English Language Arts HMH Journeys is the CUSD adopted reading program. Grammar, comprehension, phonics and vocabulary instruction are integrated Writing Types: Opinion, Narrative, Informative 5 Paragraph Essays (Write from the Beginning) Thinking Maps-we are reviewing them all Third graders continue with a Spalding program of 20 spelling words and 70 phonograms. Third grade begins learning cursive and it is used in most of their work once letter formations are secure. We will start learning cursive very shortly. Third graders continue to self select AR books at their levels to achieve personalized reading goals. My goal (8 pts first and second quarter, 10 points third and fourth quarters), students have created their own personal goal which equals mine or beats it, this year 250, 000 words need to be read to receive first dog tag. Testing will be done either before school in the library or in our classroom on a computer.

Third Grade Curriculum Mathematics CTA students are accelerated in math using Saxon. Mathboxes are completed in class (*) and at home, and turned in the next morning. Students are working toward mastering third and fourth grade standards. Students will work on daily problem solving to develop critical thinking skills and apply math concepts. Mastering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts is a must before going on to 4 th grade.

Homework Use the Weekly Agenda to guide you, we fill it out each afternoon with a self reflection on Friday. Spelling M-Th, Saxon Mathboxes M-Th, AR Reading Nightly, Reading Comprehension Due Friday, and Cursive (soon) Poem Recitation twice each quarter (first one will go home soon) Parents should check homework for accuracy, to see what their 3 rd grader learned that day, check behavior box, and sign agenda nightly. It is checked each morning, and a stamp is give if it is filled out correctly, behavior box colored and parent initialed.

Assessment Assessments: Saxon Math assessed every 5 lessons Test corrections: only with a score of 75% or lower, students can only earn a revised score of 75%, test correction boxes must be filled out correctly to earn points. Weekly spelling 20 words 10 phonograms Weekly Journeys comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary Grammar and reading assessments based off of alternate reading and grammar lessons Periodic math facts, unit science/social science assessments as needed

Paperwork will be sent home the week prior Your child will have the opportunity to do: Make a poster all about them Read an all about me fact sheet of family, pets, favorites Bring in a book to share/read (not a chapter book) Bring in a special item to share with the class FRIDAYS ONLY bring a treat to share with the class Your child will receive a special book written by their classmates. Get to choose job of the week first If you have invitations to hand out, please either give to me to pass out to individual students (reduces hurt feelings) or if it is a whole class party, star student can pass out invitations to everyone.
