Helping underprepared students prepare, prepared students advance, and advanced students excel. * • Academic Skills strives to support student success by reaching and maintaining the following goals: Provide a friendly, helpful environment conducive to learning. Encourage students to become self-confident, self-directed learners. Determine the readiness of incoming students through placement testing. Services provided: Tutoring • Tutoring is available in a wide variety of areas, including math psychology writing (Writers’ Room) philosophy biology history chemistry humanities physics finance accounting economics CIS nursing foreign languages
Supplemental instruction (SI) • Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions are offered for several courses, including courses in psychology, sociology, biology, and chemistry. • SI sessions are group study sessions offered outside of the normal class time. • The SI sessions are led by a trained SI leader who has been endorsed by the professor of the class and who has received formal training.
Study skills assistance Academic Peer Coaches are also available to assist with such areas as • time management • textbook reading strategies • designing study plans • improving memory • note taking • transition to college • test taking strategies
Athletic peer coaching • The program assists USI student-athletes to be academically successful and with the overall transition to a four-year university. • Benefits of the program include: – – – Improving overall academic performance Enhancing study skills, including test-taking and note-taking Developing routine study schedules Studying in a structured environment with supportive people Enhancing interpersonal communication skills Getting to know USI personnel and other student-athletes at USI
General studies courses College foundation courses are available to students in all majors to help them meet the demands of college-level work. One-hour courses help students get off to a sound academic start. • Foundations for Quantitative Reasoning (MATH 081) and Foundations for College Algebra (MATH 085) prepare students by giving them the skills essential for success in math. • • • Academic Reading Strategies (GENS 151) is a three-hour elective credit course that emphasizes the before, during, and after active reading strategies necessary for learning information across academic disciplines and the impact selfregulation has on a student’s academic success.
