A PARENTS’ GUIDE TO PARCC South End FSA Meeting, February 4, 2015
What is PARCC? PARCC stands for Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. The PARCC is a series of computer-based assessments that are designed to identify if students are on a path for success after high school. The PARCC is designed with the belief that assessment should be used to enhance teaching and learning. PARCC is aligned to the Common Core Curriculum Standards.
PARRC AND THE COMMON CORE
What does PARCC offer? A computer-based assessment that more accurately assesses student learning. An opportunity for more timely feedback for educators regarding student learning and the ability to tailor instructional practice. An assessment that requires students to communicate effectively, reason well, and solve real-world problems.
Who participates in PARCC? All students in grades 3 -11 will participate in PARCC during the 2014 -2015 school year.
Where will students complete the PARCC? v v v Students will complete the PARCC in the Media Center and on Chrome Books in classrooms. Students presently have access to the Media Center desktops once a week during the Computer Tech class. Additionally, Chrome Books are available to be used in the classroom. Students have been working on the technology tools that PARCC will offer.
When does PARCC testing occur? March Assessment (March 2 -27) Performance-Based Assessment (PBA). Students will perform written responses to a series of English and mathematical prompts. For ELA, students will be asked to read age-appropriate literature and compose written analyses as well as a narrative. For math, students will be assessed on how they arrive at a given solution, as well as have multiple real-world mathematical problems to solve. May Assessment (April 27 -May 21) End-of-Year assessments (EOY). At the end of the year, students will take a computer-scored test that poses a series of questions related to ELA and math. Their score will be combined with the PBA to provide a summative total.

How can you help prepare your child? Provide opportunities for your child to use a computer in a controlled setting. Allow students to type and print or email assignments. Allow students to copy and paste, highlight, scroll, drag and drop, increase and decrease text size, complete a table and organize information. Understand be familiar with grade level content. Establish good reading habits at home which include a variety of reading material. Attend and support school events. Talk to your child about what they are experiencing and learning in school. Work collaboratively with your child’s teacher.
