LEADERSHIP: DEFINITIONS q People Dimension Ø "Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential. " - Warren Bennis Ø "A leader is best when people barely know that he exists, not so good when people obey and acclaim him, worst when they despise him. 'Fail to honour people' they fail to honour you. ' But of a good leader, who talks little, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will all say, 'We did this ourselves. '" - Lao Tzu, Chinese founder of Taoism, author (6 th Century BC) Ø As for the best leaders, the people do notice their existence. The next best, the people honor and praise. The next, the people fear; the next, the people hate - Lao Tse, 604 -531 B. C. , Chinese philosopher and founder of Taoism, Tao Te Ching Ø The superior leader gets things done with very little motion. He imparts instruction not through many words but through a few deeds. He keeps informed about everything but interferes hardly at all. He is a catalyst, and though things would not get done well if he weren't there, when they succeed he takes no credit. And because he takes no credit, credit never leaves him. - Lao Tse, Tao Te Ching Ø "As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others. "

LEADERSHIP: DEFINITIONS v David & the Company of derelict. • 1 Samuel 22: 1

LEADERSHIP: DEFINITIONS v David & the Company of derelict. • 1 Samuel 22: 1 -2 King James Version (KJV) 22 David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down thither to him. 2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there with him about four hundred men. ü These men, under the Leadership of David formed the nucleus of David and Israel’s army and made exploits. Won 68 battles! ü Leaders know that all men have potentials to be useful somewhere, somehow, some day. That potential needs a leader to harness or stir up to manifest.

LEADERSHIP: DEFINITIONS q Vision & Value Dimension • “Leadership is about articulating visions, embodying values, and creating the environment within which things can be accomplished. ” - Richards and Engle (1986) “Leadership is the ability to step outside the culture to start evolutionary change processes that are more adaptive. ” - Schein (1992) v Moses – Leading Israel to a Land flowing with Milk & Honey Exodus 3: 16 -18 • 16 Go, and gather the elders of Israel together, and say unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared unto me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt: • 17 And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, unto a land flowing with milk and honey. • 18 And they shall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go, we beseech thee, three days' journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.

LEADERSHIP: DEFINITIONS q Vision & Value Dimension • • Exodus 4: 29 -31 29

LEADERSHIP: DEFINITIONS q Vision & Value Dimension • • Exodus 4: 29 -31 29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel: 30 And Aaron spake all the words which the LORD had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people. 31 And the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped. ü Leaders know they have to sell their vision to their followers even if its from God! ü Sell not force ü Leaders sell their vision by creating a Value proposition

LEADERSHIP: DEFINITIONS q Influence Dimension • "Leadership is the incremental influence that a person has beyond his or her formal authority. " - (Vecchio, 1988) • "The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority. " - Kenneth Blanchard, US management author, presenter (b. 1939) • "Leadership is influence - nothing more, nothing less. " - John Maxwell, 1998 • Authority only leads to eye service, influence triggers heart Service. That’s the real deal! • Jesus Christ & the disciples … Acts of the apostles after Jesus I Cor. 9: 16 • 16 For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!

LEADERSHIP: DEFINITIONS q Influence Dimension • 1 Corinthians 15: 1 -10 King James Version

LEADERSHIP: DEFINITIONS q Influence Dimension • 1 Corinthians 15: 1 -10 King James Version (KJV) Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. 8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

LEADERSHIP: DEFINITIONS q Relational Dimension • "Leadership is not a person or a position.

LEADERSHIP: DEFINITIONS q Relational Dimension • "Leadership is not a person or a position. It is a complex moral relationship between people, based on trust, obligation, commitment, emotion, and a shared vision of the good. " - Joanne Ciulla (1998) Considerations: Ø At the centre of all of these dimensions are people and an individual (the Leader): Ø What the individual make of the people and what the people make of the individual. Ø This is what defines the type of leaders we get and the type of leadership that we see. Ø So we have a personality style on one hand a leadership style on the other hand. v The question is: • Is leadership style dictated by the personality of the leader or by the dictates and requirement of the followers? • Can a leader separate his style from his personality?

LEADERSHIP & PERSONALITY v There are 4 personality styles:

LEADERSHIP & PERSONALITY v There are 4 personality styles:

LEADERSHIP & PERSONALITY q Four basic personality styles: v Low Expressiveness + High Assertiveness

LEADERSHIP & PERSONALITY q Four basic personality styles: v Low Expressiveness + High Assertiveness = Direct • People with direct personality styles like to be in charge. They like to take control and get to work – and they’ll work hard. v High Expressiveness + High Assertiveness = Spirited • They are persuasive, visionary types who are passionate about whatever they are working on and will throw themselves into their work with abandon. v High Expressiveness + Low Assertiveness = Considerate • These are the people-pleasers in your group. They are natural counselors, natural trainers or mentors, and they enjoy helping others. v Low Expressiveness + Low Assertiveness = Systematic • Systematic personality types are the analysts among us. They stick to the book, and want others to do the same. They value fairness and playing by the rules, no matter what.

LEADERSHIP & PERSONALITY q Leadership Styles v Autocratic • The autocratic leader chooses to

LEADERSHIP & PERSONALITY q Leadership Styles v Autocratic • The autocratic leader chooses to make the majority of decisions on his or her own. Keeps the decision making power to himself. v Democratic • Democratic leaders share the decision-making – as well as the resulting responsibility – with team members. They seek feedback and prioritize team member development. v Bureaucratic • In a bureaucratic leadership arrangement, the focus for the leader is on making certain that followers follow the rules with consistency. Bureaucratic leadership works well in environments where following the rules is more important than creativity or thinking outside the box. v Charismatic • Charismatic leadership style is based on the leader’s ability to inspire and influence the actions of others. The Charismatic leader creates the vision, with the ability to generate excitement in others about new, possibly risky ideas.

LEADERSHIP & PERSONALITY q Leadership Styles v Your personality + your leadership style will

LEADERSHIP & PERSONALITY q Leadership Styles v Your personality + your leadership style will result in what type of Leader you are…. And that is what history records as your legacy in the hearts of people and your achievement in the record of heaven • You would then be considered as one or a combination of two or more of the following: Ø Thought leaders Ø Courageous leaders Ø Inspirational leaders Ø Servant leaders § What type of Leader do want to be remembered as? § It’s a matter of choice.

OLD PERSPECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP q Leadership by Position • This is the traditional view

OLD PERSPECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP q Leadership by Position • This is the traditional view of leadership based sole on a perceived leadership position. Occupants of this position expects people to respect them by virtue of the position held rather than for who they are. They therefore demand followership and respect rather than command it. • Position may indeed confer leadership on a person, such a person may occupy a position of leadership but may not be a leader. The litmus test for such a situation is the dissertation of the positional leader by perceived followers once such a leader exits the position. This is common in government and political circles. q Distance to Followers • This is a perspective of leadership that pitches leaders and followers in two different worlds with the leader having no knowledge or first-hand awareness of the experiences of its followers while the followers only dream of the world in which the leader lives. Such situation alienated the leader from followers and does not make for any kind of bonding whatsoever. • Proponents of this perspective believes in the norm “familiarity breeds contempt”. This should not be so if well handled; it should in fact enhance respect. q Subdued Followership • There is yet another perspective that believes followers must be a conquered lot. It believe people do not submit to leadership without a strong hand. This is a “Pharaohic” perspective to leadership. Followers are expected to submit to leaders whether they like it or not failing which there would be serious consequences. The end result of such prolonged situation is an implosion and a revolution as such

OLD PERSPECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP q Elicit fear in Followership • Lastly is the perception

OLD PERSPECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP q Elicit fear in Followership • Lastly is the perception that leadership as one which must be feared. The fear of reprisal is the motivation of such followership. This was what made God to introduce the new testament after the written law only exposed sin and brought judgment (and the attendant fear), He decided to write his laws in the hearts of men. • When such leaders who lead by the rule of fear die, people never mourn them, the heave a sigh of relief, as was the case some years back in this country.

NEW PERSPECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP q John 13: 1 -9 King James Version (KJV) •

NEW PERSPECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP q John 13: 1 -9 King James Version (KJV) • 13 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. • 2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; • 3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; • 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. • 5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. • 6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? • 7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest now; but thou shalt know hereafter. • 8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. • 9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

NEW PERSPECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP q Our Lord Jesus is the greatest leader of all

NEW PERSPECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP q Our Lord Jesus is the greatest leader of all times who set the parameters for a new perspective of leadership during his earthly ministry. New Perspectives: v Leadership is a factor of investment in the life of others through SERVICE. § At a point in time, there was a debate amongst the disciples as to who was the greatest in the kingdom of heaven: • Matthew 18: 1 -4 King James Version (KJV) At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? 2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

NEW PERSPECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP New Perspectives (Contd. ): v Humility drives service which makes

NEW PERSPECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP New Perspectives (Contd. ): v Humility drives service which makes leadership EXEMPLARY. • Apostle Paul made a profound statement in 1 Corinthians 11: 1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. • A true leader leads from the front and would not demand from followers what he or she cannot give. v True Leadership takes interest in the DETAILS of the lives of followers. § Jesus was interested in the business of Peter as a fisherman and also his spiritual life: • Lk 22: 31 -32 And the Lord said, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. ü Even visited Peter’s mother in law when she was sick and healed her!

NEW PERSPECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP New Perspectives (Contd. ): v Leadership is influence. • Influence

NEW PERSPECTIVES OF LEADERSHIP New Perspectives (Contd. ): v Leadership is influence. • Influence is what would make followers do things for the leader without the leader asking them to do it but barely by reading the leader’s body language. This was the kind of influence David commanded amongst his followers: 2 Samuel 23: 14 -17 14 And David was then in an hold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. 15 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate! 16 And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD. 17 And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men. v Leadership shares, in fact gives followers the credit for achievements and accomplishment. ü It is selfless and inspiring to followers. It rallies people around a vision that is irresistible and collective. ü This is the new perspective of Leadership.

CHURCH LEADERSHIP • Current experiences being seen in Christendom with regards to leadership calls

CHURCH LEADERSHIP • Current experiences being seen in Christendom with regards to leadership calls for serious concern. Particularly with African from Nigeria to Ghana, to Kenya, to Uganda and down to South Africa we see all kinds of weird things been done by pastors to their congregation of followers which is quite worrisome. • Followers have come to believe in their leaders to the extent that some believe their leaders can do no wrong. This is a dangerous trend. Leaders are human and not infallible! There actions are not sacrosanct and should be subject to the dictates of the scripture. v Apostle Paul gave the correct perspective of followership which defines the correct perspective of Christian leadership in: • 1 Corinthians 11: 1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. • This confers on followers the need to know Christ personally in order to effectively subject themselves to Christian Leadership. This enable you know when a leader is derailing and for you to wisely pull the break. Otherwise as Matthew 15: 14 says: 14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. • So if you don’t want to end in a ditch, shine your eye!

CHALLENGES OF LEADERSHIP I’ll like to conclude this presentation by mentioning two major challenges

CHALLENGES OF LEADERSHIP I’ll like to conclude this presentation by mentioning two major challenges of Leadership: v Loneliness • Most times, leaders could be lonely as people’s seeming respect may keep them away not wanting to “disturb” the Leader. However, true leadership is warm and approachable, encouraging people to come around. v Misunderstood & Misrepresented • • Great leaders are visionaries, seeing farther than the followers. This may motivate some actions which may be misunderstood by followers and may cause problems. However effective communication by leaders will help address this type of challenge. And lastly it is not unusual for great Leaders to be mis-quoted or even misrepresented. This could be quite demotivating to leaders. This is sometimes the price of leadership. It is therefore advisable to ensure clarity and conviction in all that a leader does. • Above all, lets be a Godly leader who knows and realise that we are all accountable to the Lord, our ultimate leader. For every man shall stand before the judgment seat of Christ to give account of what he has done whether good or bad. • May our stewardship result in great eternal rewards in Jesus name.

LEADERSHIP Thank You.
