Central Idea! The Revolutionary War is over! The United States of America is a free, independent country. We need to set up a government! Where did the Founding Fathers get their ideas about government from? ? ?

Ideas of the Founding Fathers… Although an American document, the Constitution has roots in other civilizations. The people involved with the creation of a new government in America studied political thought/ideas to avoid mistakes of the past. Many of their ideas came from European documents and philosophers Although the Americans broke away from the British, they respected many British traditions and practices.

Biggest Influences: Political writers and philosophers John Locke: Two Treatises of Civil Government Montesquieu: The Spirit of Laws (1748)

Biggest Influences: The English Magna Carta (1215), the English Bill of Rights (1689), and the teaching/writing of Locke (1690) and Montesquieu (1748) heavily influenced the government that took shape in America. We are going to look at each today to begin learning about how our government was formed after the Revolution.

You will have 10 minutes with each article, then we will switch. Magna Carta (1215) 1. What kind of king was King John? Give an example (Think good or bad) 2. What did the Magna Carta, or Great Charter, state? 3. How did the Magna Carta limit the power of the King and Queen in England? English Bill of Rights (1689) 1. Write down one of the new rules/laws listed in the English Bill of Rights. Explain, in your own words, why it is important. 2. The English Bill of Rights gave more power to who? Who still didn’t receive power?

John Locke and Montesquieu (10 Minutes) Locke: Read the page, then answer this question. Locke argued that people formed governments in order to protect their rights. Why would people be willing to give up some of their individual rights? Montesquieu: Read the page, then answer the two questions. Why did Montesquieu believe that separation of powers was important? What did Montesquieu suggest?
