What is Racism? • When society thinks that one color or race is better than another and individuals are treated based on this belief (Click on the Photo to learn more).

What are Microaggressions? Racial insults towards people of color that are hidden in words and actions.

Three Kinds of Microaggressions: • Microinsult: Rude and unkind words which put down a person’s race • ”Why are your people so loud” • Microassualt: A verbal or non-verbal attack done through name-calling and behavior meant to harm a person because of their race • Calling someone a “thug” • Microinvalidation: Words or communication which deny the feelings and experiences of people of color • “Racism is not real” VIDEO

What is Racial Trauma? • Anxiety, stress, and other negative feelings experienced due to racism. • Can cause mental health symptoms such as sadness, worry, nightmares, and poor concentration. • Can cause physical health symptoms such as stomach aches, headaches, racing heart, and trouble breathing.

Additional Definitions: • Discrimination: The unfair treatment of a person based on their race, ethnicity, or culture. • Not hiring someone for a job because of their race. • Stereotype: A commonly held and inaccurate belief about a particular race or ethnic group. • “People who look like you are only good at basketball”. • Prejudice: Disliking or hating someone because of their race or ethnic group. • A person having negative feelings when being around someone of a certain race.
