When must a worksite have first-aid trained employees? In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace, one or more employees must be adequately trained to render first -aid. “Near proximity” generally means within 3 -4 minutes. Certain industries have more specific requirements. 2

First aid supplies must be readily available and accessible to all employees, stored in clearly marked containers (kits) that protect the supplies, and, be portable – can be moved to an injured worker. First-aid kits from a local retailer or safety supplier is adequate for most nonindustrial employers. 3

First aid in construction Every crew must have a person trained in first aid and every crew leader must be trained in first aid. All vehicles that transport work crews must have first aid supplies. A “crew” is two or more employees at a worksite. 5

First aid in agriculture Requirements are the same as non -agriculture workplaces. 6

First aid in logging At logging worksites, all workers must have first aid and CPR training certificates. At road construction & maintenance worksites with two or more workers, at least one must have a first aid and CPR training certificate. At sorting yards, two or more persons with first aid and CPR training certificates must be available. All worksites must have first aid kits and all vehicles, log trucks and road graders must have first aid supplies. 7

First aid in telecommunications Fixed locations must have first-aid trained personnel available. Field work involving two or more employees must have at least two first aid trained persons with valid first-aid and CPR certificates. Employees working alone must have basic first-aid training and hold a valid first-aid certificate. All vehicles used to transport employees must have first aid supplies. For remote sites, first aid supplies must reflect isolation, number of workers and hazards of the worksite. 8

Emergency washing facilities – a first aid measure Emergency washing facilities or equipment are considered a form of first aid. Emergency eyewashes are required where there is the potential for worker eye exposure to corrosives, strong irritants or toxic chemicals. If major portions of a worker’s body would be exposed to these substances, an emergency shower is required. 9

Emergency washing equipment is required if employees are exposed to the following types of chemicals: Corrosives – acids and caustics or chemicals with a p. H of less than 2. 5 or more than 11, Strong irritants that cause skin inflammation, Toxic chemicals that are absorbed through the skin, including some pesticides. 10
