Year 1 Phonics Screening Check 2019 -2020
Why are the children being screened? • Every Year 1 child in the country will be taking the phonics screening check in June. • This check will ensure that we know the children can read effectively or what the children need to learn in Year 2. • Ark Byron has been very successful with this in the last three years.
What will the children be expected to do? The check is very similar to tasks the children already complete during phonics lessons. Children read 40 words, sounding each word out then blending it together: • Some words are real • Some words are made-up or “alien” words, • Some words have two syllables.

When will the screening take place? • The screening will take place over the course of a week in the beginning of June. The children cannot retake the test at any other time so it is very important your child is in school during this week. • The check is designed so that children of all abilities will be able to take part.
Who will administer the check? • The children will complete the check one at a time in a quiet area of the school. • Either I or Mrs Stanciene will conduct all of the screening checks with the children. • The screening will only take 5 -10 mins with each child.
How can you help? • Please read with your child! • At this stage you do not need to do anything extra. We will contact you in the Spring term if we feel your child needs extra practice. • We give children lots of practice and support children who find it hard. • Please do not print off past checks and try them with your child!
Reading at home. . • At home, when reading you can ask your child to 1. identify the ‘special friends’ first 2. then ‘Fred talk’ (sound out) 3. Say the whole word. • Regular words: e. g. sharp, long, mouth, clean, strong, thrash, clay. • https: //www. oxfordowl. co. uk/forhome/reading/phonics-made-easy/
