What is the census? The census is a count of all people and households across England Wales. It takes place every 10 years. The first census was in 1801. The next census is in 2021. The census is run by the Office for National Statistics.

What is the Office for National Statistics? The Office for National Statistics (or ONS) looks after collecting and publishing statistics about: Our population Our society Our country’s economy The ONS prepares all the questions in the census, which every grown-up will answer. Then the ONS goes through all the answers and the information is used by the government, local government, business and charities.
