Welcome to Meet the Teacher 2018 -2019 Mrs. Andriano Class 3 -217

Reading Workshop • Leveled Library- Students choose “Just Right-within reach” books. • Teacher’s College/Columbia University Reading & Writing Project.
Reading Workshop • Independent Readingwhere students practice strategies using their Just Right books. • Partner Readingwhere partners read and practice these strategies together.
Reading Workshop Students are expected to read at home for at least 20 minutes EVERYDAY. • • A reading log will be filled out to record their daily reading and reading habits.
Reading Workshop Reading Life Folders are used for: • Reading Logs • Reading Strategy Charts • Reading Goals • Reading Learning Progression (Rubrics)
Word Study & Vocabulary • Words are given weekly/biweekly with a specific focus. All word work will be completed in their ‘purple’ Word Work notebook. • Daily homework examples: Choice Board Activities *3 times each *ABC order *Sentences *Word search *Tests on Friday • New vocabulary words will be given weekly/biweekly.
Writing Workshop • Writing Folders are used for: • Writing Strategy Charts • Writing Goals • Writing Rubrics • Writing Notebooks are used for: • Various writing entries that have been sparked by thinking about memorable moments. • Non-Fiction & Persuasive Writing • Literary Essays • Fairy Tales **At the end of each unit we publish a piece of writing** *We celebrate our progress and accomplishments*
Mathematics • All work is done in the math working textbook and notebook. • Lessons are taught each day with daily homework. • Math tests are given at the end of each Topic. • Homework will be differentiated. • Log in information will be assigned to view lessons and practice at home.
Mathematics • Problem Solving • Follow these 4 steps: – Understand: What is the question? What am I asked to find out? – Plan: Make a Plan for how you will solve the Problem. Go back and reread the problem for clues. – Solve: Solve the problem. – Check: Make sure to check your work.
Social Studies • This years social studies text book will help us understand the different communities around the world. • We will also be studying current events with the Scholastic News Magazine.
Assessments • Conferences: Conducted during Reading and Writing Workshop to individualize instruction. • Reading assessment tests will also be given throughout the year. • New York State days. Tests: Tests have been reduced from three to two – English Language Arts (ELA): April 2 nd-April 4 th – Mathematics: May 1 st- May 3 rd • We will be preparing for these tests in the classroom with a variety of test prep materials.
Homework Policy • Homework needs to be COMPLETED every night. • Homework Steno Pad needs to also be SIGNED by a parent or guardian every night. • Incomplete homework must be completed. • Read all notices and empty folder daily. • Students record missing homework in teacher’s binder and sign it in when completed.
Behavior • Students should always be prepared and ready to work and learn. • Students should be respectful to one another as well as adults (out of classroom teachers, lunch aides, etc. ) • Students should always pay attention in class and focus on their own work. • Clip Chart (in class behavior management system). • Great Citizens

General Information • Birthday Parties: – Snacks and juice boxes may be brought in and left with the security guard in the morning. – Please notify me of any birthday parties in advance. • Scholastic Book Clubs – Please enclose a CHECK in an envelope with your child's name and class on it. – Class code Q 24 Q 3 sign in and register online • Notices should be signed and returned as soon as possible. • Water bottles are permitted. • Trips will be announced. • Assembly: – Assembly is usually held on Fridays as announced. – Assembly dress will be required. (Black pants and a white shirt for boys. Black pants or skirt and a white shirt for girls. Girls are also allowed to wear dresses. ) • Dismissal – Pick up children at 2: 20 pm. • Any questions or concerns can be expressed through writing or by calling the school during school hours, contacted me through our class website.
