Task 1 - Variables A variable is something that changes in an experiment… There are three types of variable that you need to know about: Independent variable – you change this in your experiment. Dependent variable – you record this during your experiment. Control variable – these are all of the things that you must keep the same (fair test) WEEK 4

Task 2 - Variables example Your teacher asks you to find out how the slope of a ramp affects the time taken for the car to travelling down it. The independent variable is… the slope of the ramp The dependent variable is… time taken to reach the bottom of the ramp. Control variables are… The length of the ramp, the material the surface is made of, The type of car.

Investigation 1 – Homer at the bowling alley • Homer has just been selected

Investigation 1 – Homer at the bowling alley • Homer has just been selected for Mo’s Bar bowling team • He is undecided which of his three pairs of bowling shoes he should wear for the inter-bar bowling championship • Should he wear the rubber soled shoes, the leather soled shoes or the plastic soled shoes? • He tests them out at the bowling alley by running a fixed distance of 2. 5 metres and ranks the shoes to which will give him the largest amount of slip. Can you spot the 3 types of variables?

Investigation 2 – Marge in the kitchen • Marge is making waffles with maple

Investigation 2 – Marge in the kitchen • Marge is making waffles with maple syrup for the family’s breakfast but has forgotten how many eggs she normally adds to make 10 waffles for the whole family. Everyone likes the same amount of syrup in their waffles. • The night before, she makes some trial batches testing with 2 eggs, 4 eggs and 6 eggs. Then gets Homer to rate them according to taste before he says which is the best, second best and which is the worst. Can you spot the 3 types of variables?

Investigation 3 – Bart at the skateboard park On the way home from school

Investigation 3 – Bart at the skateboard park On the way home from school Bart and Millhouse stop off at the skate park. The two of them decide to have a downhilll race on their skate boards over a distance of 10 metres. For an additional challenge, Bart thinks it would be a good idea for both of them to put different numbers of school books on their head’s. They get Lisa to time them and calculate their speed. Can you spot the 3 types of variables?
