Welcome to Math 1!! Math 1 is designed to engage students in realistic problem-solving classroom activities. Lessons will include you working collaboratively in small groups for a period of days, hands-on investigations, discovery learning, and student presentations. With the changes in classroom structure come changes in classroom behavior. You must be mindful of your behavior to ensure that it does not undermine the collaborative climate that fosters other students’ desire to participate.

Vocabulary • Algebraic Expressions - a mathematical phrase that can include numbers, variables, and operation symbols, but no equal sign • Coefficient – a number that is multiplied by a variable • Constant – a value that does not change • Distributive Property – for every real number a, b, and c: a(b + c) = ab + ac and a(b – c) = ab - ac

 • Equivalent Expressions – expressions that have the same value for all variables

• Equivalent Expressions – expressions that have the same value for all variables • Integers – positive and negative whole numbers • Like terms – have identical variables; that is, they have the same variables and the same exponent. Constants are like terms as well. • Order of Operations – PEMDAS Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction

Tips to Remember • When multiplying a number and a variable, the number is written first like: 5 a (NOT a 5) • Be careful of order with subtraction & division!! “ 7 – t” is very different from “t – 7”

Tips to Remember • “the difference of 5 and t” and “ 5 decreased

Tips to Remember • “the difference of 5 and t” and “ 5 decreased by t” are written as 5 – t • “ 5 less than t” and “ 5 subtracted from t” are written as t – 5
