Implement theory and practice in curriculum Following study units (4/10) mostly include theory and practice: • Personal Counselling • Developing Counselling • Theoretical Approaches to Counselling • Networking Skills 23. 10. 2013 JAMK/TEC Jukka Lerkkanen ja Virva-Liisa Pekkarinen 4
Personal Counselling • The aim is that the student is able: - to create good relationship in different counselling situations - to build a meaningful discussion with a proper beginning and end - to use theoretical approaches in counselling - to build his/her own concept of good counselling - to evaluate his/her own counselling skills and set new aims to his/her own professional development
Personal Counselling Methods: - Litterature review (students read books about how to create a good and trustworthy relationship) discussions in small groups - Two digital counselling sessions in real situations watched and evaluated in small groups
Networking Skills The aim is that the student: - Knows the different laws and rules concerning counselling and guidance in different organizations - Knows how counselling is organized in different contexts - Can co-operate in interdisciplinary teams - Knows the local Employment agency services and working life - Method: three one-week- training periods
Developing Counselling The aim is that the student: - Knows different documents concerning counselling and guidance in his/her own organization - Finds an issue which needs to be developed, plans and fullfils that and writes an article using proper references
Theoretical Approaches to Counselling The aim is that the student: - Knows some of the most important theoretical approaches to counselling - Can choose the most useful approach in a certain situation both in personal and group counselling - Can justify his/her decision theoretically
Possibilities for implement theory and practice • The students have heterogeneous basics with their guidance and counselling skills • Almost all study units include opportunity to develop both theory and practice. The learning-tasks are practical-based and the based on consumption that student has agency to test, develop and apply his/her learning in their working context. • During the contact period the students share their experiences with their peer-group • The learning of reflective approach is the aim of our study counsellor education 23. 10. 2013 JAMK/TEC Jukka Lerkkanen ja Virva-Liisa Pekkarinen 10
Problems /challenges • We meet difficulties when the student has not working context where they could test, develop and apply their theoretical learning • Then we have risk to have too theory orientated education. 23. 10. 2013 JAMK/TEC Jukka Lerkkanen ja Virva-Liisa Pekkarinen 11
Open questions • We have just established new curriculum with NICE core competencies • Nowadays we have more study units and learning tasks. – Do we have too many learning tasks? – Do we manage with timing and avoid stressing peaks? – How well we manage to organize reflective sharing of learning during the contact periods? 23. 10. 2013 JAMK/TEC Jukka Lerkkanen ja Virva-Liisa Pekkarinen 12
