INTRO (insert Enduring Issue) was a major part of French history leading up to and during the French Revolution of 1789. Inequality exists when one group or one person has more authority over another. Prerevolutionary France had various types of inequality including social inequality, land inequality, tax inequality, and gender inequality. In France, leading up to the French Revolution, many people experienced social and property inequality. The French people were organized into a rigid social pyramid called the Old Regime. Social mobility was not possible under this system.

Body #1—Enduring Issue of Inequality Social and land inequalities existed in France before and during the French Revolution of 1789. Social inequality stemmed from the Old/Ancient Regime, which existed in France for hundreds of years. This hierarchy divided French people into three social classes. There was absolutely no social mobility between each Estate, which was very frustrating to members of the Third Estate. According to Jackson J. Spielvogel’s circle graph, the French Third Estate made up 97% of the population, yet only owned 55% of the land (doc 1). The Third Estate didn’t have enough land to grow crops/food. This resulted in massive poverty and famine. (continue your analysis and make any possible *connections!)
