Example - The winds are named for the direction from which they blow; for example, the northeast trade wind blows in the northern hemisphere from the east toward the west.

Three major global wind systems The prevailing winds include northeast and southeast trade winds above and below the equator, prevailing westerlies near the middle latitudes, and polar easterlies near the poles.

Trade Winds They blow from a highpressure belt near 30° latitude in each hemisphere, called a subtropical high, toward a low-pressure belt near the equator, called the equatorial low.

Trade Winds In the equatorial low the air rises and travels aloft to the subtropical highs, where it then sinks. Because of the apparent deflecting force of the earth’s rotation, known as the Coriolis force, the trade winds do not blow due south or due north toward the equator. I

Doldrums or Horse latitudes The doldrums are term used to describe those parts of the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean affected by areas of low pressure around the trade winds. The low pressure is caused by the heat at the equator, which makes the air rise and travel north and south high in the atmosphere, until it subsides again in the horse latitudes. Some of that air returns to the doldrums through the trade winds. This process can lead to light or variable winds and more severe weather, in the form of squalls, thunderstorms and hurricanes. The doldrums are also noted for calm periods when the winds disappear altogether, trapping sail-powered boats for periods of days or weeks. Belts of calm air surround the trade wind belts

Additional force or acceleration acting on the motion of bodies in a rotating system

Additional force or acceleration acting on the motion of bodies in a rotating system of reference. Thus, an object moving above the earth in a generally northerly or southerly direction, and with a constant velocity relative to space, will be deflected in relation to the rotation of the earth.

Jet Steams • Earth weather is strongly influenced by atmospheric conditions and events that occur at the boundaries between wind zones • Narrow bands of fast, high-altitude, westerly winds are called jet stream, flow at speed up to 185 km/h at elevations of 10 km to 12 km • Polar jet stream separates the polar easterlies from the prevailing westerlies. • Subtropical jet stream separates the trade winds from the prevailing westerlies • Load jet stream site
