The Christmas Island Christmas with the smell of the sea !!
General • The Territory of Christmas Island is a territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean, composed of one island. It has a population of 2, 072 residents who live in a number of "settlement areas" on the northern tip of the island: Flying Fish Cove (also known as Kampong), Silver City, Poon Saan, and Drumsite. The majority of the population is Chinese Australian of Malaysian Chinese descent. It was named "Christmas Island" because it was discovered on Christmas Day (25 December 1643). • The island's geographic isolation and history of minimal human disturbance has led to a high level of endemism among its flora and fauna, which is of interest to scientists and naturalists.
Culture • The culture of Christmas Island is unique, for people of many different ethnicities inhabit the area. The majority of residents are Chinese, but Europeans and Malays reside there as well with small Indian and Eurasian communities too. The main languages of Christmas Island are English and Chinese. Dress is usually modest, and tourists should keep a wrap, such as a sarong or pareo, on hand to cover shorts, bathing suits, and tank tops. It is common to remove shoes when entering a house and to also avoid touching anyone's head.
• Religious beliefs are diverse, but people are very tolerant of each other's religions. The religions practised include Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Islam, and Christianity. There is a Mosque located in Flying Fish Cove. With all of these religions, there are many religious festivals, such as Spring Festival, Hari Raya, Christmas and Easter. Additionally, there is a Bahá'í centre located on the island.
Flora and fauna • Christmas Island is often referred to as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean - and rightly so. It’s a place of great natural beauty, where a unique ecosystem of plants and animals has developed over millions of years. It is one of the world’s most significant seabird breeding sites, and home to a number of endemic crabs. The red crab migration each year is a world-famous event that inspires awe and wonder in all who witness it.
