Members of task group 11 INFN Gran Sasso Carla Cattadori, Matthias Laubenstein, Luciano Pandola, Claudia Tomei Institute for Nuclear Research, Moscow Igor Barabanov, Albert Gangapshev, Vasily Kornoukhov, Valery Kuzminov, Evgeny Yanovich Kurchatov Institute, Moscow Andrey Tikhomirov Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna Alexander Klimenko, Anatoly Smolnikov, Sergey Vasiliev MPI für Kernphysik, Heidelberg Wolfgang Hampel, Gerd Heusser (Consultant), Josefa Oehm, Ute Schwan, Hardy Simgen Institute of Physics, Jagellonian University, Krakow Marcin Wojcik EC-JRC-IRMM, Radionuclide Metrology, Geel Mikael Hult 29/09/2020 H. Simgen, MPI for Nuclear Physics / Heidelberg 2
Available techniques u Ge spectrometry: - Baksan u NAA: - LNGS - MPI-K - Hades (Belgium) - LNGS u ICP-MS: - Mr. Gerdes (Univ. Frankfurt) u 222 Rn emanation measurements - MPI-K u - - LNGS - Moscow and -spectroscopy - Krakow 29/09/2020 H. Simgen, MPI for Nuclear Physics / Heidelberg 3
Underground Ge spectrometers u LNGS: highest sensitivity: Ge. MPI detector ~20 m. Bq/kg (soon Ge. MPI-2) u Baksan: 3(4)-detector setup u Other deep underground detectors: - LNGS, Baksan, Hades sensitivity: u MPI-K (15 mw. e. ): 2 (soon 3) ~2 m. Bq/kg Selection of appropriate spectrometer depends on sample-size, sample-shape, required sensitivity, logistics … 29/09/2020 H. Simgen, MPI for Nuclear Physics / Heidelberg 4
NAA and ICP-MS u They are not for free! u NAA sensitivity strongly depends on matrix u ICP-MS: Pre-treatment (purity) u secular equilibrium may be broken Careful selection of appropriate samples for these techniques! 29/09/2020 H. Simgen, MPI for Nuclear Physics / Heidelberg 5
222 Rn emanation technique u Absolute sensitivities: few 10 atoms (!) u Achievable sensitivities strongly dependent on samples (size, structure, S/V-ratio) and clean sample containers. u achievable: ~1 m. Bq/m 2 and 0. 3 m. Bq/m 3 u consumes time and manpower Careful selection of appropriate samples for this technique 29/09/2020 H. Simgen, MPI for Nuclear Physics / Heidelberg 6
- and -spectroscopy u used for surface contamination studies u 210 Pb and 210 Po deposition u -spectrometry most sensitive Applied for lead screening 29/09/2020 H. Simgen, MPI for Nuclear Physics / Heidelberg 7
Organisation u We need to know: – Which samples? Where are they? Amount? Size? Required sensitivity? u Urgency! What to be measured first? u To decide / compare: All informations must be collected at one place u Can be done at MPI-K Heidelberg e-mail to: Hardy. Simgen@mpi-hd. mpg. de u Web-page in preparation: Will show results and queued samples! 29/09/2020 H. Simgen, MPI for Nuclear Physics / Heidelberg 8
