SAR Overview • Violations that affect student-athlete eligibility. • Waivers. – – Extension of eligibility waivers. Hardship waivers (independent institutions). Hardship waiver appeals. Season-of-participation waivers. • Eligible. • Ineligible.
Jim Laucher • First-year men’s soccer SA. • Earned a 1. 63 GPA fall 2015. • His institution requires a GPA of 1. 7 to maintain satisfactory progress. • Declared ineligible for spring 2016.
Jim Laucher • Coach Rip Netz asked Jim to join the lacrosse team in the spring. • Coach Netz assumed Jim was eligible because he played soccer and did not follow institutional procedure to add him to roster. • The athletics director noticed Jim playing in a home lacrosse game the following week.
Jim Laucher • Jim understood he was ineligible for soccer, but did not realize he was ineligible for all sports. • Jim played in three lacrosse games - two on the road and one at home.
Next Steps • Resolve all factual and interpretive issues. • Determine whether a violation occurred. – Bylaw 14. 4. 1 – Satisfactory-Progress Requirements. – Bylaw 16. 8. 1. 2 – Competition While Representing Institution. • Determine whether the violation affects eligibility. – De minimis, restitution.
Next Steps • Determine other relevant information: – Is Jim otherwise eligible now? Or, is he still academically ineligible? – If he is still academically ineligible, what does that mean? Can you seek reinstatement? Do you have to wait until he is eligible? – What about other waiver options?

Relating Cases Why is this important? SAR Request Violation Report Saves time when entering case information. Allows easier tracking of related cases. Helps with case review and expediency. Creates more helpful precedent review.
Copying Case Information • From Requests/Self-Reports Tab. • Copy to Secondary/Level III Violation Report. – Copying does not Relate.
Completing Violation Report • Add Subcase Type.
Completing Violation Report • Add Required Signature. Not Required: Outside Athletics and Conference signatures.
Enforcement Penalty • Fine for competition while ineligible. – $250 x 3 competitions = $750. • Nullification. – Does not apply to scrimmages or nontraditional competitions. • Coach suspension?
Paying a Fine Using RSRO Fines can be paid: • Inside the violation report, or • After you have received a decision.
