Procedure Isolate the variable by performing the inverse operation on the number that is attached to the variable. The inverse of multiplication is division. The inverse of division is multiplication. Use the “Golden Rule. ” Perform the same operation on the other side of the equal sign.

Example The inverse of division is multiplication. Repeat the operation on the other side.

Example The inverse of division is multiplication. Repeat the operation on the other side. m ÷ 3 = 10 x 3 m = 30

Check. Use the original equation. m ÷ 3 = 10 30 ÷ 3 =

Check. Use the original equation. m ÷ 3 = 10 30 ÷ 3 = 10 10 = 10

Example 2 The inverse of multiplying is dividing. 7 b = 105 ÷ 7

Example 2 The inverse of multiplying is dividing. 7 b = 105 ÷ 7 15 7 105 b = 15 7 35 35 0

Check 7 b = 105 7(15) = 105

Check 7 b = 105 7(15) = 105
