Sketching and Line Techniques

Sketching and Line Techniques • Even in the world of high technology and computer

Sketching and Line Techniques • Even in the world of high technology and computer skills, sketching is still one of the most important skills for engineers and designers. • Sketching is one of the first steps in communicating ideas for a design, and steps thereafter. • Common practice for designers to prepare sketches for drafters to convert to work drawings. • Practice is needed to become skilled in creating neat, sharp and clear sketches. But it’s a skill that is important in design careers.

Sketching Lines • The lines used in creating sketches closely correspond to those used

Sketching Lines • The lines used in creating sketches closely correspond to those used in creating technical drawings, except, of course, that they are not as sharp and crisp. • The basic line types used in making sketches are: visible lines, hidden lines, center lines, dimension lines, sectioning lines, extension lines and cutting plane lines.

Types of Sketches: Orthographic • Orthographic sketching relates to flat impression of an object

Types of Sketches: Orthographic • Orthographic sketching relates to flat impression of an object showing no depth. • There are 6 views of an object that may be incorporated in an orthographic sketch: top, front, bottom, back, right side and left side. • Each view name (eg. Top) has a specific placement so other professionals understand sketch • View edges must be aligned. • Consistent distance between views: important because it helps when completing the drawing and keeps drawing clean & professional • Views placed in a specific position: important because when you read a drawing, you know exactly which view of the object you are looking at
