WHAT ARE TEXTURES • Texture in art- is the illusion of surface quality in a work. • Textures often are created by repeating shapes and patterns over the surface that you are drawing • What might that object be made of? • How does the object feel to the touch?

HARD VS SOFT TEXTURES • Hard- it is solid firm and resistant to pressure • Brick, Wood, Rock • When creating hard items in your room remember that means the light that hits it is going to be very reflective • Soft- are easy to mold, compress or fold • Clothe, Pillows, Foam • When creating soft surfaces in your room you want to remember that it absorbs light creating smooth transitions between highlights and shadows

FUZZY AND ROUGH TEXTURES • Fuzzy- is the illusion of a surface that looks and feels like it is fuzzy • Fur, carpet, teddy bear • To create this fuzzy use a series of short lines wrapped around the shape • Rough- has less smooth texture and has more contrast • Cement, Brick, Sand paper • To create a surface that is rough the reflected light is less making softer variances in values but the deeper the dips or cuts are in the surface the rougher the texture is

SHINY AND MIRROR SURFACES • Shiny- is having a smooth or glossy surface •

SHINY AND MIRROR SURFACES • Shiny- is having a smooth or glossy surface • Glass Cups, Windows, Glass Table Tops • Mirror-surfaces are reflective light • Mirrors, or screens(computer, television, phone etc) • To create these types of surfaces you want to create an underlying value with a sharp white on top of it to show the reflection of light or highlight
