REDCap - Introduction • • Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) tool is web based

REDCap - Introduction • • Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) tool is web based data management database system REDCap should be used primarily for Research, Surveys and Quality Improvements REDCap must not be used for collecting clinical data used as primary records for a patient’s care UNMC REDCap can be used from anywhere in the world and from mobile devices like laptop, i. Pad, and smart phones RITO offers four versions of REDCap • Online version with SMS texting capability • Offline version • Mobile version Technical support and project design consultation is available during normal business hours (9: 00 AM – 5: 00 PM) Researchers are entitled up to 2 hours of project design consultation time from RITO (yearly) at no cost Most UNMC users are able to use REDCap for free on a self-serve basis for projects lasting less than 1 year; Fees are incurred for: • Long-lived projects (lasting > 12 months) • Excessive data use (> 2 GB per year) • Technical support and services (e. g. , external accounts, changes to production projects)

REDCap - Compliance REDCap is designed with built-in features to address confidentiality and compliance

REDCap - Compliance REDCap is designed with built-in features to address confidentiality and compliance requirements Access Control • By default, all UNMC employees who have xxx@unmc. edu address has access to UNMC REDCap at https: //unmcredcap. unmc. edu • Non-UNMC users can make a request to RITO for setting up a REDCap project for a small fee • Additional REDCap accounts can be created for external users for a small fee Audit Trail • Every operation in REDCap is tracked and can be easily retrieved at the project level Environments • UNMC REDCap provides two environments (Development and Production) for creating web projects • If the project is collecting Protected Health Information (PHI), RITO requires the project owner to provide IRB approval information when the project is ready to be deployed to production • Development projects are for testing only and it is violation of RITO policy to collect production type data in Test environment • Projects are backed up nightly, however restoration of data is subject to hourly fee Training • There is no formal training required to use REDCap but video tutorials and help text are available within each module in REDCap. Also, the ‘Help & FAQ’ tab in REDCap contains a lot of useful information • However, RITO offers periodic workshops, on-demand presentations to departments

Server Infrastructure • RITO has deployed 126 servers (60 physical, 66 virtual) • Server operating systems are Windows Server (2008, 2012, 2016) or UNIX (Cent. OS Linux, Ubuntu Linux, Free. BSD, Solaris) • Servers host web servers, application servers, database servers, storage servers, specialized research servers, VM host servers and SFTP server • We have one large storage server at Holland Computing Center attached to supercomputers (non-PHI) • We also have two mini-supercomputing clusters for informatics work • Majority of the servers are deployed behind UNMC internal firewall and a few of them are deployed in between two firewalls – DMZ (exposed to Internet population) • Interested users can request server resources from RITO for conducting research related activities

XSEDE Supercomputing Network • Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) is national supercomputing

XSEDE Supercomputing Network • Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) is national supercomputing network facility • XSEDE is funded by NSF at national level and has 16 supercomputers distributed across US that are all connected via network • XSEDE offers many computing resources to researchers at cost (UNMC RITO has membership): • High Performance Computing (HPC) • High Throughput Computing (HTC) • Image Visualization (non-identifiable medical images analysis) • Software like MATLAB • Storage • Testbeds • Researchers can request free account on XSEDE network by contacting RITO • For more information, visit www. xsede. org

Database Platforms • RITO hosts and offers a variety of database platforms on Linux

Database Platforms • RITO hosts and offers a variety of database platforms on Linux and Windows operating systems • Current RDBMSs (hosting applications from cardiology, Rheumatology, Oncology, and Neurology) include: • My. SQL • Oracle 11 g and 12 c • Microsoft SQL Server • Postgres • Researchers requiring custom database building services can contact RITO

Web and Application Servers • RITO offers web servers for hosting web based applications

Web and Application Servers • RITO offers web servers for hosting web based applications • Often web server and application servers are deployed on same hardware • Web applications can be either Internet- or intranet-based • RITO has Apache Tomcat infrastructure both inside and outside the firewall • When researchers request to host Internet-based application on RITO server, ITS Security’s approval is a time-consuming part of deployment

Programming Services • RITO offers custom programming services • Web programming can be done

Programming Services • RITO offers custom programming services • Web programming can be done in Java, PHP, Java. Script, Node. js • Other programming tasks can be done in Perl, Windows and UNIX shell scripts • Building Databases – Custom databases can be designed, loaded, and hosted on RITO servers • Database Programming – ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) programming, building SQL scripts, reports, stored procedure

Data Storage Following Data Storage services are offered by RITO • • Onsite Storage

Data Storage Following Data Storage services are offered by RITO • • Onsite Storage (PHI and non-PHI) Supercomputer Attached storage (non-PHI) Box Cloud Storage (PHI & non-PHI) Archival Storage (PHI & non-PHI) RITO also offers one-on-one consulting services on Research Data Management to meet the needs of funding agencies like NIH, NSF, CDC and others RITO website has very extensive information on Research Data Management, please visit our site for more information: https: //www. unmc. edu/vcr/rito/data-management/index. html

Other Services • RITO works very closely with ITS Security, Privacy, Compliance, IRB, Network, Internal Audit, and various other department s of ITS • RITO helps UNMC researchers on choosing the best configuration on hardware, software, and sometimes even on PCs • RITO do presentations on REDCap, Research Data Storage and Management, Secure Data Transfers, Box cloud storage best practices • RITO plays significant role as a “Liaison” between ITS Security, Privacy, Compliance, and IRB. This role is one of our major time consuming task • Frequently, researchers are visiting RITO office and receiving consulting services on technology use in their research
