What is reciprocal teaching? Reciprocal teaching is where the students talk to their teachers about the meaning of texts to help get a better understanding. Their our four main strategies used by students in reciprocal teaching.

1. Summarizing A great way to have students understand the reading is through summarizing. Using summarizing: The student has to eliminate the unimportant details. Identify points that do matter Explain points in their own words Allows students to display and help students understand material

2. Questioning Thinking of questions helps students identify areas that are confusing. Try and make connections with material that has already been read Enables students to think critically and get their classmates to do the same

3. Clarifying is answering posed questions. Point out areas that may seem confusing and help clarify them Students can share their own thoughts Students should try to help their fellow students with trying to understand material

4. Predicting Students come up with ideas on what could happen next. Students have to consider what has already happened They need to use their imagination to think ahead Connects students to think with the author

How does it work? The order of the four strategies is not set in stone. Choose text selections carefully: Make sure text covers all four strategies Think of your teaching style Think of your student’s learning styles

How to implement reciprocal teaching in the classroom:

According to Donna Dyer of the North West Regional Education Service Agency in North Carolina she recommends: ➔Put students into small groups ➔Give each person in the group a role: ◆ Summarizer ◆ Questioner ◆ Clarifier ◆ Predicter

➔Have students begin reading the assigned text. ◆ Encourage them to use note taking skills to help them prepare for discussion. ➔At the given stopping point the summarizer will begin to highlight key ideas up to this point. ➔Then questioner will then pose questions: ◆ Unclear parts ◆ Puzzling information ◆ Connections to other concepts already learned

➔The clarifier will address confusing parts and attempt to answer questions that were asked ➔The predictor can offer suggestions about what will happen next in the story ◆ May suggest what events might occur next ➔The roles of the groups can then be switched for the next selected reading
