PLOT • Luciano (Aniello Arena) was a fishmonger who longed to be a star on the Italian reality show “big brother” • His dreams come true when he lands a audition to be on the show • After the audition he is conviced he was going to be casted on the show, so he sells his fish market and begins to obsess over the tv show • While waiting for a call back, he starts to believe he is being watched by the porducers of the show • This is when he starts to become insane and gives away all his possesions to look more appealing and generous for the tv show. • We see his begin to lose everything in his life including his sanity, wife, and possesions: just to land the role on the show

ASPECTS OF ITALIAN COMEDY • In all Italian comedies a common theme seen is an obsession with consumerism and new modern technology like television • In ”reality” its seen that Luciano is no longer in touch with reality because of his dream to be rich and famous like the tv starts. • He is so enthralled by Tv and trying to live the life of luxury he can no longer lead a normal life. • Another aspect of Italian Comedy is tragedy • The theme of tragedy can be seen in ”reality” when Luciano begins to lose his sanity, family, and ability to live a normal life.

ASPECTS OF POSTMODERNISM • One aspect of Postmodernism is the lack of coherence in the way a film is shot and using the camera in many ways. • We can see this in “Reality” as the director (Matteo Garrone) wanted the opening scence to have aspects of a fairytale • the camera comes down to Earth from high above, to make the audience feel like theyre coming from a dream to reality. • Garrone ended the film to resemble more of a science fiction movie, rather then a fairytale. • His many ways of shooting the film, resembles postmodernism

DIRECTOR • This movie “reality” was directed by Matteo Garrone • He wrote this movie based on a true story that happened to his wife’s brother • He is his own camera man, and says he uses the camera in an emotional way in unison with the actor.
