The EDI Transformation Module 1) The EDI Transformer is a Pilot. Fish automated Transformer Module that converts EDI flat files into an XML representation of the EDI flat file. It can also convert that XML representation of EDI back into the flat file format as well. 2) Pilot. Fish uses the EDI spec to provide an XML schema that is a good representation of the EDI flat file. 3) On the source side, the Transformer converts flat file EDI into XML. On the target side, the transformer converts XML into flat file EDI.

The EDI Format Builder 1) In the Data Mapper, Format Builders that correspond with Transformation Modules are designed to produce XML formats that match what the Transformer expects to be either producing or receiving. 2) In order to do this, the Format Builder must be configured with the same kinds of custom options as the transformer. For example, the use of Friendly Names must be consistent.

Friendly Names 1) To help with EDI, Pilot. Fish provides a “Friendly Names” feature, that can be applied to the Transformer and the Format Builder. 2) Friendly Names adds a descriptive name to each EDI field in its XML form, making it easier folks who don’t have the EDIspec memorized. 3) Because using Friendly Names changes the XML schema, it is very important that its use is consistent between the Transformer and Format Builder, or else inconsistent results will happen. 4) Friendly Names also significantly increases the size of the XML produced by the EDI Transformer, so it is recommended for early, exploratory work, and not for the final production interface.
