Sierra Madre Villa Public Art Project Planning and Community Development Department Executive Summary • Sierra Madre Villa Public Art Project - Capital Improvement Project that was developed with community input. • Artist Kyungmi Shin - will create light pole sculptures, medallions and a mural that encourage use of public transit and alternative modes of transportation. • Council Resolution & execution of City’s amended Maintenance Agreement will allow Caltrans to issue an Encroachment Permit to allow for artwork installation. 1

Background Planning and Community Development Department Budget • August 2012 - Department of Public Works identified $50, 000 in CIP funding for public art project. Community Outreach • • • July and August 2012 - Stakeholder group created and refined vision statement. September and October 2012 - Community Meetings publicized project and Request for Qualifications. November 2013 - Additional Community Meeting to review Final Art Plan. Artist Selection • November 2012 - Selection panel reviewed 24 proposals and recommended artist Kyungmi Shin of Shin Gray Studio. Approval • • • October 2013 - Arts and Culture Commission Final Art Plan approval. October 2014 - Caltrans Amendment of existing City Landscape Maintenance Agreement for artwork finalized. Encroachment Permit issuance pending City Council action. 3

Vision Statement Planning and Community Development Department Stakeholder Vision Statement • The Sierra Madre Villa Pedestrian Corridor public art project will reflect theme generally of transportation (pedestrian, bicycle and auto) as well as the character of the East Pasadena neighborhood. The project will promote a safe and reflective passage through the corridor to the light rail station and beyond. 4

Concept Development and Final Art Planning and Community Development Department • Developed in Alignment with Public Art Master Plan’s Goals and Vision, specifically addressing: Ø Recommendation #3: Celebrate Pasadena’s Unique Gateways. Ø Recommendation #4: Employ Public Art to Promote a More Walkable City. • Project is intended to: Ø Demonstrate art concept collaboration among artist, Planning & Community Development, Public Works and Transportation Departments. Ø Be accessible and viewable by pedestrians and drivers at all hours. Ø Serve as a way finder between the freeway, the light rail, pedestrian path and nearby bus stop. Ø Create welcoming and safe environment. 5
