What is OPT? • OPT allows for a student to legally work off-campus. •

What is OPT? • OPT allows for a student to legally work off-campus. • A student can use OPT before graduation and after graduation. • One OPT per degree level: bachelor, master’s, and doctorate. • OPT is for 365 days total at each level; STEM OPT Ext. is longer. • Use it or lose it; it does not carry over.

Types of OPT 1. Pre-completion OPT (C)(3)(A). Used before completion of a degree. 2.

Example 1: If you have 4 months of part-time pre-OPT, then your post-OPT time will be reduced by 2 months to 10 months. Example 2: If you have 4 months of full-time pre-OPT, then your post OPT time will be reduced by 4 month to 8 months. *Pro-tip 1: Advisable to have a job ready for pre-completion OPT. * *Pro-tip 2: Choose dates wisely*

*** Example scenario: Fall 2020 Pre-OPT*** You apply for Pre-OPT from 08 -26 -20

You applied early and received your EAD card in time. 1 st day allowed to work 08 -26 -2020 End of semester 11 -24 -2020 90 days @ ½ rate = 45 days Start of Spring 2021 01 -10 -2021 46 days @ full rate = 46 days In this scenario, you will have 274 days on Post-OPT: 274 = 365 - 46. Regardless of whether you work or not, you will be charged 91 days.

Example: You apply for OPT on December 1 st, 2020. You list your start date as January 22 nd, 2021. You receive your card in the mail on March 1 st, 2021 with the work period 1 -22 -2021 until 1 -21 -2022. You will have lost over 1 month of OPT time! • It takes USCIS between 3 -5 months to process. • Apply earlier as opposed to later!
