THE HISTORY OF THANKSGIVING! � � Historically a religious observation to give thanks to God. The initial “Thanksgiving” feast, held in 1621, was really a traditional English harvest celebration. The Pilgrims shared it with the Native Americans. Without the Native Americans, the Pilgrims may not have survived the harsh winter and been able to celebrate their first harvest of plentiful crops in the New World. � Demonstrates that feasts like the one at Plymouth were held throughout the colonies after fall harvests. � � However, all 13 colonies did not celebrate at the same time In 1789, George Washington became the 1 st president to declare Thanksgiving a holiday. � � By mid 1800’s many states observed the Thanksgiving holiday. In 1863, Lincoln gave his Thanksgiving Proclamation declaring the last Thursday in November to be a day of Thanksgiving.
WHAT IS THANKSGIVING? � It’s a holiday, where family and friends come together to catch up, tell jokes, share stories, share food, and generally give thanks for all the good things! � (exactly what they did at the very first Thanksgiving)
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? � � Is all about counting our blessings and sharing a meal with loved ones, it’s not about presents, shopping or commercialism, but in our high-tech world, Thanksgiving is a time when we can focus on the truly important things in life: spending time with those we love and taking time of all we have to be grateful for! It is a time to embrace traditions, both old and new, and to celebrate our families in peace. There are precious few days in a year when we can simply spend time with those we love, Thanksgiving offers the perfect moment to pause and reflect on all that is happened throughout the year.

IN CONCLUSION � Thanksgiving is the best holiday. Spend time with families and friends sharing stories, jokes, the food, and giving thanks to god and the people we love!
