The Four Elements of NHS Scholarship Character Leadership Service

Scholarship You have already completed the first step toward NHS membership by earning a weighted 3. 8 (or higher) G. P. A. , and participated in Honors, and Advanced Placement courses, and AP Exams. Congratulations!

Character is who you are when no one is watching… (It’s already established!)

How Is “Character” Determined? Teachers or sponsors complete confidential evaluations of student character. Ø Evaluations are based on classroom contact, extra-curricular activity participation and personal observation. Ø Attendance. Ø Discipline records.

Leadership includes being elected or selected to work as: ØA club officer. ØA chairperson for a committee. ØA representative on a church, parish, or school council. ØA marching band squad leader. ØA Scout Patrol leader. ØA class officer.

More Leadership… Ø A concert band section leader. Ø A choir officer. Ø A student Council representative. Ø A leadership Camp Youth Staff member.

Service includes volunteer activities for which you DO NOT receive any type of compensation such as a salary or school credit. Examples of service activities include: Fundraising Civic activities Tutoring

More Service… Ø Teaching Sunday School. Ø Volunteering at a nursing home/hospital. Ø Volunteering at the public library. Ø Church related mission trips. Ø Volunteering Ø Helping at elementary schools. with Eagle Scout/Girl Scout projects.

A Final Note…. . Ø Ø Ø Membership in the National Honor Society is a privilege, not a right. Members are expected to uphold the four elements of the organization. Failure to uphold these elements based on behavior, attendance, could mean dismissal from NHS.
