Wasted Medicines – Insight Gathering Department of Health funded report (2010) - £ 300 million/year wasted on unused medicines: Ø £ 110 million wasted medicine returned to pharmacies for safe disposal annually Ø £ 90 million worth of unused prescription medicines are stored in people’s homes Ø £ 50 million worth of NHS supplied medicines are disposed of annually by Care Homes* £ 1 in every £ 25 spent on medicines & allied products in primary and community care is unused and wasted. £ 2. 8 million could potentially be saved in West Kent through better medicine management, could be spent on: • • 470 more hip replacements 300 more heart by-pass operations 65 more community nurses 400 more knee replacements NHS West Kent Clinical Commissioning Group
